Korean Stone BBQ Steamboat @ Ampang Waterfront

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 7.5
  • Environment (1-10): 7
16 November 2011: I bought "50% OFF Korean Stone BBQ + Steamboat Buffet" coupons from Everyday. It's RM13.90 per person after discount. The restaurant is located in Ampang Waterfront, above Super Ceramic Tiles.

Here's the variety of food available for BBQ and Steamboat. There are seafood, fish balls, meat balls, marinated meat, noodles, egg, dessert, fruits, drinks, etc... Besides, special Korean stone is used for BBQ. As for steamboat, we are allowed to choose two different type of soup, where we chose clear soup and tomyam soup.

In general, there are wide variety of food selections offered. As for the quality, I would say it's average. I don't put high expectation for buffet at RM13.90 per person. At this promotion price, it's definitely worth a try. If it's at normal price, I might consider going again, but I'll think twice :)

  • Environment (1-10): 7.5
7 November 2011: Ah Yip Herbal Soup (阿业靓汤) is a must go place if you are looking for healthy, yet delicious food, especially soup. As for me, I'm a herbal soup craze. I've been looking up and down for a place that serve nice herbal noodle soup and I found it here!

Here comes my favourite!

Herbal Duck Soup Noodles (原盅药材鸭汤面) (RM13.90++) -> This is my favourite dish here. We can choose the type of noodle we want and I like it to go with mee suah (面线). The herbal soup is really tasty with generous amount of herbs, mushrooms, vegetables and of course, duck meat. I really love this! Highly recommended.

Besides, they offer set meal from RM18.90++ that comes with a soup of your choice, a dessert of your choice, braised chicken, vegetables and rice. The price of the set meal depends on the type of soup and dessert that you choose. Here's the set that we chose (RM28.90++ for whole set)...

  •  'Guang Xi' Cordycep & Scallop Soup (广西虫草瑶柱汤) -> This soup helps to moisten dryness and acts as a tonic for spleen and lungs. This is very nutritious, especially for the guys :P Besides the nutritious, it is very tasty indeed. This soup is suitable and good for everyone, not only the guys. Recommended.
  • Chinese Melon & Longan Dessert (翅瓜龙眼糖水) -> Taste good, not too sweet, just nice. Worth a try.
  • Rice with Braised Chicken & Vegetables -> Since this is not the focus of this restaurant. I would say this is a balance and healthy set meal, which tastes alright.

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7.5

  • Environment (1-10): 7.5
26 October 2011: I bought a "Thai Steamed Siakap with Lime & Chilli Sauce at Bangkok Jam for RM18" coupon from Groupon. Bangkok Jam is an authentic Thai restaurant under the Sea Cuisine group of restaurants. Bangkok Jam is located in BB Park of Low Yat Plaza.

Here comes the food...

  • Thai Steamed Siakap with Lime & Chilli Sauce (RM18) -> Tasty and appetizing. Worth a try with the discount coupon. Slightly overpriced for normal price (RM54).
  • Green Curry Chicken (RM16.90++) -> Green curry quite creamy and tasty. However, not as good as those served in its sister restaurant, Amarin Heavenly Thai in Mid Valley Megamall.
  • Pineapple Fried Rice (RM15++) -> Average. I can easily find something similar anywhere at lower price.

Here are what we had...

  • Spaghetti Aglio Olio (add Prawn) (RM29.90++) -> Tasty and nicely done spaghetti aglio olio with large and fresh prawns. I like this. Recommeended.

Bibi Wok @ Bandar Puteri Puchong

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 8
  • Price (1-10): 7.5
  • Environment (1-10): 7.5
12 October 2011: I took a day off for my birthday. My bf and I went to Bandar Puteri Puchong to shop for something and stop by at Bibi Wok for lunch. Bibi Wok serves mainly Thai and Nyonya food.

Here are some snapshots of the main entrance to Bibi Wok and the dishes we had...

  • Nyonya Chicken Rendang (娘惹冷当鸡) (RM18++) -> Chicken is tender and juicy. Rendang is very tasty. Not too spicy. Just nice.
  • Thai Creamy Salted Egg Squid (泰式咸蛋奶油苏东) (RM16++) -> Squid is nicely cooked. The creamy salted egg tastes great! Very appetizing. Recommended.
  • Bayam Soup (上汤苋菜) (RM15++) -> Slightly overpriced for this dish. However, there's some salted egg in the soup, making it tastier than ordinary bayam soup that I normal have. Worth a try.

9 October 2011: I visited Cheers Palace (饮胜皇宫海鲜酒楼) for dinner with 2 close friends to celebrate my birthday in advance. Cheers Palace is a restaurant under the Unique Seafood brand, which specializes in live seafood selections. Cheers Palace is located on Jalan Cheras, next to the furniture mall.

Here's what we had (I've no idea on the price because my friends paid for this meal)...

  • Steamed Live Garoupa (清蒸游水石斑) -> Very fresh and well-steamed. Taste just nice. I like this.

  • Stir-fried Yau Mak (清炒油麦) -> Reasonably good.

Restoran Ducking @ Jaya One, Petaling Jaya

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 6.5
  • Price (1-10): 6.5
  • Environment (1-10): 7.5
4 October 2011: Ducking, which is located right at the center of Jaya One, serves chinese food in comfortable and cosy environment.

Here's what we had...

  • BBQ Combination with Rice (四宝烧味饭) (RM14.80++) -> Rice with four different types of meat. The meat was generally satisfactory.
  • Hong Kong Noodle with Roasted Duck (帝王烧鸭面) (RM10.80++) -> Roasted duck is common, skin is not crispy enough, meat is not tender enough. Noodle is too oily.
  • Meat with Fermented Beancurd (南乳沙律肉) (RM5++) -> This is a compulsory appetizer. It's served once we are seated. This is too hard to be consumed. Seriously not recommended. Kindly request to change to another type of appetizer if possible.

Nadeje Cafe @ Dataran Pahlawan Melaka Megamall

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 6.5
  • Environment (1-10): 7.5
2 October 2011: Nadeje Cafe in Melaka is famous for it's Mille Crepe. Mille Crepe stands for thousands layer for very thin pancake. There are two branches of Nadeje Cafe in Melaka. The main branch is located at Plaza Mahkota. However, since I was already in Dataran Pahlawan Mall, I decided to go to the branch there.

Here are the Mille Crepes that we had...

  • Original (RM9) -> I personally don't really like the texture of mille crepe where I can feel the layers of crepe. I prefer smoother type of cake, e.g. mousse cake. Besides, this original mille crepe is a bit too sweet for me.
  • Tiramisu (RM9) -> Still, I don't like the texture. The taste is quite nice, not too sweet.
  • Double Chocolate (RM9.50) -> Putting aside the texture, The taste of chocolate cream is quite rich and not too sweet. Among the 3 flavour, I like this the most. Fyi, I'm a dark chocolate freak.

I do recommend those who likes mille crepe to try Nadeje. As for myself, it's a waste of money for me cause I don't appreciate mille crepe.

Here's the location and contact of Nadeje:

  • Address: G-23 & 25, Jalan PM 4, Plaza Mahkota, 75000 Melaka. Tel: 06-283 8750. Business Hours: 12pm-10pm (Closed on Mondays)

Classic Kopitiam @ Dataran Pahlawan Melaka Megamall

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 7
2 October 2011: Being the "tour guide" of the trip, I planned to bring my relatives to try Melaka famous chicken rice ball. My initial plan was to bring them to either Chung Wah or Hoe Kee near Jonker Street. However, Hoe Kee was closed while the queue outside Chung Wah is crazy. Instead of queuing up under hot sun, I drove to Dataran Pahlawan and look for a place to have an easier and more comfortable lunch.

We came across Classic Kopitiam which also sell chicken rice balls and decided to give it a try. Here are what we ordered for 5 person...

  • 1/4 Roasted Chicken (RM10++) -> Quite tasty.
  • 1/4 Kampung Chicken (RM13++) -> Chicken quite fine and tastes not bad.
  • Chicken Rice Balls (RM1.20++ per portion) -> Rice is slightly too soft and sticky that I can't really feel the texture of the rice.
  • Fish Ball Soup (RM10++) -> Quite springy and tasty.
  • Cendol (RM4++) -> Average.
Here's the location and contact of Classic Kopitiam...

Wedding Dinner @ Tropicana Grand Ballroom & Banquet, Melaka

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7.5
  • Price (1-10): -
  • Environment (1-10): 8.5
1 October 2011: I attended a relative's wedding dinner reception at Tropicana Grand Ballroom & Banquet, Melaka. It is also referred to as Spring Garden, under Tai Thong Group. The ballroom is spacious and nicely decorated.

Here's the menu...

Here comes the food...

The dishes served are generally satisfactory except for the "Sweet fancy duets" which is disappointing. The bao is too dry and not fine enough. Besides, the pancake is a bit soggy, not crispy at all.

Here's the location of Tropicana Grand Ballroom & Banquet, Melaka...

Uncle Duck Hong Kong Steamboat @ Times Square, KL

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7.5
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 7
26 September 2011: Uncle Duck Hong Kong Steamboat Restaurant (得哥火锅餐厅) is a steamboat restaurant from Hong Kong. It serves steamboat in air-conditioned, cosy and clean environment.

Here, steamboat is served in individual pot, cooked on induction cooker. I personally favour this due to safety and hygienic reason.

Steamboat sets available here are:
  • Seafood (RM20.90)
  • Pearl Oyster (RM19.90)
  • Mixed Beef (RM19.90)
  • Australian Beef (RM21.90)
  • Dory Fish (RM19.90)
  • Cuttlefish Noodle (RM21.90)
  • Vegetarian (RM16.90)
  • Roasted Duck (RM19.90)
  • Sliced Pork (RM19.90)
  • Chicken (RM18.90)
  • Australian Mutton (RM22.90)
  • Ma Yau Fish (RM22.90)
Besides, each individual is free to have their steamboat ingredient cooked in their preferred soup. The choices of soup available here are:
  • Congee
  • Coriander & Century Egg Soup
  • Chicken Soup
  • Tomato & Fish Soup
  • Tomyam Soup
  • Hong Kong Satay Soup
  • Super Spicy Soup (add RM2)
  • Ginseng Soup (add RM10)
  • Herbal Soup (add RM4)
  • Korean Ginseng Soup (add RM10)
  • Pumpkin Onion Cream Soup (add RM2)
I personally like the tomato & fish soup. It's tasty by itself yet doesn't cover the taste of the ingredients. As for the ingredients set, I ordered Sliced Pork Set.

Sliced Pork Set consists of sliced pork, vegetable, corn, radish, mushrooms, fish cakes, dumplings, prawn, etc... Some of the ingredients are frozen food yet still taste fresh when cooked with steamboat.

Finally, I would like to specially recommend the Mango Sago (芒果西米露) here, which I order almost every time I dine here. However, I did not order that this round because I was on diet. It's the best Mango Sago I've ever had, definitely better than those in the famous KTZ (记得吃).

Pao Xiang Bak Kut Teh @ Setapak

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 6
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 7
25 September 2011: Pao Xiang Bak Kut Teh (宝香绑线肉骨茶) specializes in string tied bak kut teh. It comes with very little soup, which looks more like the sauce. The soup/sauce is supposed to be concentrated bak kut teh. However, after trying Pao Xiang Bak Kut Teh in Mid Valley Megamall, I concluded that I do not enjoy this type of bak kut teh. I prefer those with more soup.

Anyway, I decided to give it another try at a different branch. It was 2pm on a Sunday yet the restaurant is less than 10% occupied.

Here are what we had...

  • Luan Kut (软骨), Sui Kut (小骨), Ka Wan (脚弯) (RM10.50++ per bowl) -> I can't really differentiate which is which. They taste the same. The main difference is the type of meat, either it's with less fat or more fat, less bone or more bone. As for the taste, they are almost tasteless. The soup/sauce which is supposed to be concentrated bak kut teh is also very plain. I would say this is the worst bak kut teh I have ever tried. A staff there told us honestly that the soup is obtained from the HQ in Klang. Then each individual branch/franchise will add water into the soup. The amount of water added into the soup directly affects the taste of the soup.
  • Tau Fu Pok (豆腐卜) (RM5++) -> Similar to the meat, this is almost tasteless as well.
  • Yau Mak (油麦) (RM8.50++) -> Average.
  • Yau Char Guai (油条) (RM4++) -> Ironically, this is the best dish of all, even though it is just average. Not crispy enough.
After this meal, I told myself that I won't give Pao Xiang Bak Kut Teh another chance. Here's the location and contact of Pao Xiang Bak Kut Teh @ Setapak...

Pan Ki Dim Sum @ Sri Petaling

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 7
25 September 2011: After a morning walk at Bukit Komanwel, we went to Pan Ki Dim Sum (潘记包饺点心) for breakfast. It is one of the 3 famous dim sum restaurants in Sri Petaling. Pan Ki is less crowded and cleaner than the other 2 because it is located at inner road, while the other 2 are located at outer main road. I personally prefer the environment here.

Here comes the dim sum...

Most of the dim sum there are quite fresh and tasty, slightly milder than those in Clan Dim Sum. I personally like the fish-based dim sum there.

However, undeniably, the Kai Woh Pao (鸡窝包) here is not as good as the Kai Woh Pao in Clan Dim Sum. The glutinous rice here is not as tasty and slightly harder.

Besides, the price of the dim sum here is slightly higher than Clan Dim Sum. It costs us around RM60 for 4 person.

Here's the location of Pan Ki Dim Sum...

  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 7.5
24 September 2011: It's 3pm on a Saturday and we still haven't taken our lunch. After driving through few roads in Sri Petaling, we decided to try Yue Mic Ka Restaurant (鱼米家), which is supposed to specialize in Fish Noodles.

Since it's already past lunch time, the restaurant was rather empty and quiet. Anyway, it's a clean and cozy environment.

Here are what we had...

  • Preserved Vegetables Pork Soft Bone (梅菜猪软骨煲) (RM12.50) -> Pork is soft and tasty. Recommended.
  • Fish Paste Meehoon (鱼滑米粉) (RM8.50) -> The soup is without milk by default. It tastes not bad though.
  • Chicken Herb Drumstick Rice (一品鸡腿饭) -> This is rather disappointing. It's almost tasteless. I can't taste any herb at all.
Here's the location and and details of Yue Mic Ka...

Ho Ho Steamboat Restaurant @ Sri Petaling

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 7
23 September 2011: Ho Ho Steamboat Restaurant (好好海鲜火锅之家) is a steamboat restaurant that serves fresh steamboat ingredients from Pulau Ketam. Some of the ingredients and home-made. Besides, only clear base soup is used here. There are few branches of Ho Ho Steamboat Restaurant in Klang Valley. This branch in Sri Petaling spans across 3-4 shop lots, yet it is normally at least 80% occupied during dinner hours.

Here's the menu and here are what we had...

  • Set Menu (RM15.50 per set) -> We ordered 2 sets of this. This set consists of prawn, fish slice, fish ball, meat ball, sui gao, fish noodle, bihun, yee mee, egg, etc... Most of them are quite fresh.
  • Sliced Pork (RM20) -> We also ordered extra portion of sliced pork. It's really thinly sliced, hence it's cooked just by dipping it into boiling soup for a shortwhile.
  • BBQ Chicken Wings -> Since there are 3 of us, we ordered 3 sets of this. I'm not sure how much this costs because this is paid separately and I'm not the one paying. This is quite tasty. Recommended.

Chili Espresso @ Sooka Sentral, KL Sentral

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 7.5
23 September 2011: I went to Chili Espresso for a colleague's farewell lunch. It serves ample variety of local favourites, as well as, some western food in pleasant and cosy environment. It is normally fully occupied during lunch hour. It's advisable to make prior reservation to avoid disappointment.

Our selection of food might be a bit weird because these are not the signature dishes of Chili Espresso. The more popular dishes here are local food like mee mamak, ayam percik, etc... Anyway, here comes the food...

  • Fettucine Alfredo (RM18.80++) -> Tastes quite good and not too cheesy. Recommended.
  • Spaghetti Aglio Olio (RM16.80++) -> I personally don't really like aglio olio and this is typical aglio olio.
  • Grilled Dory Fish (RM16.80++) -> Quite good. Worth a try.
  • Tom Yum Beehoon (RM14.80++) -> Average beehoon in seafood tom yam soup. Nothing impressive and no complaints.

Restoran Ye Look @ Sri Petaling

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 8
  • Price (1-10): 8
  • Environment (1-10): 7
7 & 9 September 2011: Restoran Ye Look (以勒海鲜饭店) is a famous eat-out place in Sri Petaling, especially for those who are looking for a casual Chinese-style dinner. We dine there twice this week because I'm addicted to the herbal chicken there.

Here are what we had...

  • Herbal Kampung Chicken (药材马来鸡) (RM23) -> I have been craving for this type of herbal chicken for such a long time ever since the restaurant serving my favourite herbal chicken in Pandan Indah changed it's cook. I have been hunting for this dish up and down in Klang Valley and I finally found it here. This is half kampung chicken cooked with chinese herbs in aluminium foil. The chicken is very young, juicy and tender. The thick herbal gravy is really tasty. I personally love this. High recommended!
  • Stir-fried Fish Slices with Ginger and Spring Onion (姜葱鱼片) (RM20) -> Quite small portion and slightly overpriced. Tastes average. Not worth the price.
  • Braised Pork with Salted Fish (咸鱼花腩煲) (RM12) -> Big portion and quite tasty. Worth a try.
  • Stir-fried Kang-Kung (清炒蕹菜) (RM8) -> Average dish at reasonable price.
  • Lotus Root Soup (莲藕汤) (RM6) -> Quite tasty but the strong taste of cuttlefish covered the original taste of lotus root. I would prefer if it's without the cuttlefish.

Restoran Kam Lun Tai @ Sri Petaling

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 6.5
  • Price (1-10): 7.5
  • Environment (1-10): 8
6 September 2011: It's 9pm on Tuesday night and we were trying to avoid being stuck in Sri Petaling pasar malam. Hence, we ended up having dinner at Restoran Kam Lun Tai (锦纶泰大城堡大饭店). Here's the list of promotional dishes at affordable price:
Here are what we ordered...

  • Curry Fish Fillet (咖喱鱼片) (RM12++) -> Taste of curry powder is too strong. There are less than 5 pieces of fish slices in the whole pot.
  • Nam Yee Ribs (南乳骨) (RM10++) -> Taste alright but too bony. Not much meat can be found.
  • Yau Mak with Garlic (蒜米油麦胆) (RM8++) -> Some of the vegetables are over-fried until the vegetables become yellowish in colour. This should not happen in this "supposed to be" reputable Chinese restaurant.
  • Braised Noodles (焖伊面) (RM12++) -> Average.
In general, most of the dishes in this meal are disappointing. We suspect that the main chef was not around because it was already after 9pm.

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 6.5
  • Environment (1-10): 7.5
5 September 2011: We were searching around Sri Petaling area for a place to have dinner where parking is not a concern. We came across Harbour Steamboat (海港火锅) and decided to give it a try. When we walk into the restaurant, a staff asked whether we made any reservation. If not, we can only dine from 7pm to 8pm because there are a few reservations at 8pm.

Harbour Steamboat serves ala carte steamboat. We can choose the type of ingredients we want by specifying the portion. The minimum portion is 1/2. The menu with the list of all available soup and ingredients are shown below:

Here's the steamboat pot with the soup of our choice...

As for the ingredients, here are what we had...

  • Pepper Soup (特色胡椒粒汤)
  • Chicken Slices (秘制鸡肉片)
  • Deep-fried Fish Balls (炸鱼丸)
  • Egg (鸡蛋)
  • Grouper Slices (新鲜石斑片)

  • Mushrooms (金针菇 & 凤尾菇)
  • Meehoon (广东米粉)
This meal costs RM67.20 in total for 2 person. I think this is overpriced. As for the quality of the food, I would say it's generally satisfactory. Nothing to complain but nothing impressive. When we left the restaurant at 8pm, we saw many chairs arranged nicely outside the restaurant. The owner is expecting long queue although it's a weekday. I don't understand what actually attracts the crowd...

Black & White Station @ Pandan Indah

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 7.5
2 September 2011: Black & White Station in Pandan Indah serves Chinese and Western food in clean, cosy and comfortable environment. I bought "[53% Off] 2-course Western Meal + 1 Ice cream Dessert for 2 people at Black & White Station for RM20 instead of RM42.35" voucher from Groupon. It looks unusually quiet here for a Friday evening. I have no idea what's the reason.

This deal includes:
  • 2 mushroom soup
  • 2 main course (BBQ grilled chicken chop OR Grilled fish chop)
  • Chocolate and vanilla ice-cream with oreo
Here comes the food...

  • Mushroom Soup -> Quite tasty and creamy but slightly too salty.
  • BBQ Grilled Chicken Chop -> The BBQ sauce tastes quite unique. It's a bit sweet, sour and spicy. Very appetizing. Recommended.
  • Grilled Fish Chop -> I chose garlic sauce for this. The grilled fish chop looks more like fried fish chop and it's too salty. I don't really enjoy this.
  • Ice-cream with Oreo -> Normal ice-cream with standard Oreo. Refreshing.
  • Orange + Apple + Carrot Juice (RM6.50++) -> In addition to the 2 course meal, we ordered this healthy drink which is supposed to help in digestion and good for the lungs. This tastes not bad. Worth a try.

Restoran Makanan Laut Soon Fatt @ Sri Petaling

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 8
  • Price (1-10): 8
  • Environment (1-10): 7
1 September 2011: Restoran Makanan Laut Soon Fatt (顺发海鲜饭店) is a popular dinner spot for Chinese families around Sri Petaling area.

The crowd can be seen as early as 6pm daily. You will have problem getting a table after 7pm. However, you don't have to wait long because the service here is really fast. It's the most efficient Chinese restaurant I've ever been to, especially when you order daily recommended precooked dishes. I waited for less than 10 minutes for the food to be served.

Here are what we had...

  • Herbal Chicken with Soup (药材鸡汤) (RM25) -> This is a precooked dish. Huge pot of tasty chicken and soup with generous amount of herbs. Highly recommended.
  • Braised Pork Ribs with Yam (芋头焖排骨) (RM12) -> This is another precooked dish. Pork and yam are well cooked and tasty. Recommended.
  • Stir-fried Young Potato Leaves (清炒树苗) (RM9) -> Normal stir-fried vege.
I strongly recommend this restaurant for daily casual dinner due to the minimal waiting time, good food at reasonable price. Here's the location and details of Restoran Makanan Laut Soon Fatt @ Sri Petaling...

Kinnaree Thai Restaurant @ Jaya One, Petaling Jaya

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 8
29 August 2011: I bought 2 "[50% Off] RM25 for RM50 worth of Authentic Thai Cuisine from Kinnaree Thai Restaurant" vouchers from Groupon. Kinnaree Thai Restaurant offers wide variety of Thai gourmet in a cosy and relaxed atmosphere. It is shortlisted one of the best Thai restaurant in Kuala Lumpur for 2010.

Here are what we ordered...

  • Pandan Chicken (RM12++) -> Marinated chicken wrapped in pandan leaves served with ginger and sesame sauce. RM4 per piece with minimum order of 3 pieces per table. Not well-marinated enough. I can easily find something similar in other Thai restaurant at cheaper price. Nothing impressive. I still prefer pandan chicken in Amarin Heavenly Thai and Imperial Rama.
  • Pineapple Fried Rice (RM16++) -> Rice not well-fried enough, still very soft and sticky. Taste average. Definitely not the best pineapple fried rice I've ever had. Not worth the price.
  • Green Curry Chicken (RM24++) -> Grilled chicken topped with green curry in coconut milk. Really huge portion, too much for 2 person. Big pieces of chicken breast meat. A very filling dish but not satisfying. I don't really like the taste. Too much of coconut milk and covered the taste of green curry. What a great disappointment. We couldn't even finish half of this. The green curry chicken in Amarin Heavenly Thai is still my favourite.
  • Steamed Fish with Lime (RM42++) -> Steamed boneless seabass with spicy lime sauce. I love the boneless part of it. Other than that, this is another disappointment. The fish itself is not fresh. Besides, it's served without any heating tools at the bottom, causing it to cool very fast especially in air-conditioned environment. This is a basic practice in any restaurant that serves fish.
  • Mixed Vegetables with Oyster Sauce (RM14++) -> This definitely the best dish of the meal. I know this sounds sarcastic but it's the fact...
  • Seafood Tom Yam (RM14++) -> Taste average. Not hot and spicy enough. I still prefer tom yam soup in Imperial Rama.
In conclusion, I don't think I'll return to Kinnaree Thai Restaurant again. It's not worth it even with discount vouchers.

Town Steamboat Restaurant @ Penang

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 7.5
  • Environment (1-10): 6
27 August 2011: Town Steamboat Restaurant (火锅之家) in Macalister Road, Penang serves buffet steamboat, barbeque and wide variety of readily cooked food. Considering the range of food selection available, the price is very reasonable. Here's the price list:
  • Height <100cm : Free of charge
  • Height 100cm - 120cm : RM4.90
  • Height 120cm - 140cm : RM8.90
  • Height >140cm : RM22.90
  • Senior Citizen >55 years old : RM14.90

Despite the huge compound of the restaurant, it is always fully occupied. You are advised to make reservation in advance to avoid disappointed or getting a poorly located table which is too far away from the food. Since you have to barbeque your own food, the place tend to get oily, stuffy and smelly. Be ready to bath thoroughly from head to toe after the meal. Besides, there are also barbeque pork and satay cooked on the spot. You have to queue up to get them. The barbeque pork taste good but a bit too fat. The satay tastes not bad as well.

Here are the raw ingredients for steamboat and barbeque...

The ingredients for steamboat includes variety of fresh seafood, meat, processed food (fish balls, meat balls, sausage, crabstick, etc...), vegetables, noodles and eggs. As for barbeque, the meat are well-marinated.

Besides raw ingredients, there are wide selection of ready-to-eat food such as fried noodles, rice, bak kut teh, yau char guai, egg tarts, fries, dim sum, ice-cream, herbal jelly, pudding, drinks, etc... Most of them are generally satisfactory.

Maxim Dim Sum Restaurant @ Pekaka, Penang

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 8
  • Price (1-10): 8
  • Environment (1-10): 6.5
27 August 2011: Maxim Dim Sum Restaurant (美食之家茶餐楼) is my favourite and "must go" dim sum restaurant whenever I'm in Penang. It serves wide variety of fresh and tasty dim sum at reasonable price. Maxim Dim Sum occupies 3 shop lots and the tables are normally fully occupied especially during weekends.

Here are what he had...

Most of the dim sum are of high quality at very affordable price (less than RM5 per plate). Here's the location and contact of Maxim Dim Sum @ Pekaka, Penang...

Ocean Green Restaurant @ Penang

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 8.5
  • Price (1-10): 8
  • Environment (1-10): 8
26 August 2011: Ocean Green Restaurant (海洋青海鲜楼) is a restaurant under the management of Paramount Hotel. It is one of the best seafood restaurant in Penang Island. It serves fresh seafood caught daily from the sea surrounding the island. This is my family's favourite restaurant in Penang. We love the food, as well as, the breath-taking beach-side scenery here.

Here are what we had...

Chicken Satay (RM15) -> The chicken satay here costs RM1 each. This is our "must-order" item every time we are here. This is the best satay I have ever eaten. The uniqueness of this satay is that the sauce is applied on the satay while they are grilled over charcoal fire. The meat is juicy and tender while the sauce is well-absorbed into the satay.

  • Steamed Grouper (清蒸石斑) (RM63) -> The seasonal price of live grouper is RM9 per 100g. The fish is really fresh and tasty. Highly recommended.
  • Fresh Boiled Tiger Prawns (蒸虎虾) (RM8) -> 3 pieces of really fresh tiger prawns. The original taste of the prawn itself is good enough without any additional flavouring.
  • Sizzling Oyster (铁板耗) (RM12) -> My dad likes this because it's not oily at all, unlike those commonly found elsewhere that are too oily.
  • Steamed Noodles (焖生面) (RM12) -> I personally don't really like this. Noodle a bit too soft and not springy enough. Tastes average.
  • Stir-fried Kangkung (清炒蕹菜) (RM10) -> Very young kangkung. This is the first time I eat kangkung without any thick stems that are commonly found in kangkung.
