The Treats @ KL Sentral

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 6
  • Price (1-10): 7.5
  • Environment (1-10): 7
26 April 2011: The Treats is located at a quite secluded corner in KL Sentral Station. Hence, this is our first time having lunch there. The Treats serves mainly local favourites.

  • Nasi Lemak with Fried Chicken (RM8.90++) -> Average.
  • Nasi Lemak Biasa (RM4.50++) -> Average.
  • Dry Curry Noodle (RM7.90++) -> Doesn't look and taste like dry curry noodle. It's more similar to dry noodle with sambal toppings. Not recommended.
  • Curry Noodle Soup (RM7.90++) -> The curry is very water and almost tasteless. One of the worst curry noodle I've ever eaten.
In conclusion, we will not return to The Treats again!

Here's the location of The Treats @ KL Sentral...

25 April 2011: We went to Sushi Zanmai at The Gardens for dinner today. We were very lucky because there's no queue yet. I usually observe long queue outside Sushi Zanmai even on normal weekdays.

Here are what we had...

  • Unatama Don (RM15.80++) -> Roasted eel simmered with egg on rice. Quite tasty.
  • Yakitori (RM6.80++) -> Skewered chicken grilled with teriyaki sauce. Chicken itself is tasteless. Teriyaki sauce not tasty enough. I prefer yakitori in Sakae Sushi.
  • Unatama Sushi (RM4.80++) -> Eel and omelette sushi. Eel and omelette are my favourite. I like this. Recommended.

Restoran Potluck @ Sunway Giza Mall, Kota Damansara

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7.5
  • Price (1-10): 7.5
  • Environment (1-10): 7.5
23 April 2011: I went to Sunway Giza Mall for a gathering dinner with friends and we came across Potluck. Potluck serves steamboat (individual pot) and BBQ. We went for steamboat and BBQ buffet which is RM19.90++ per person.

There are 5 types of steamboat soup base to choose from; plain chicken, chicken herbal, tomyam, plain porridge and pumpkin porridge. 1 person can only choose 1 type of soup base. We chose chicken herbal and tomyam soup base. Both the soup taste great!

Besides, there are wide variety of steamboat ingredients as well, such as prawns, squid, shell fish, oyster, chicken, eggs, mushrooms, vegetables, etc... They also serve satay and few other types of grilled meat. Most of them are quite fresh.

I have to compliment the various type of sauce available there. You can find almost any type of sauce that you can think of. Soy sauce, normal chilli sauce, Thai chilli sauce, green chilli sauce, sweet sauce, garlic sauce, etc...

Finally, the buffet comes with a complimentary scoop of ice-cream. Too bad that there's only 1 flavour available that day, which is vanilla. How I wish they have chocolate ice-cream as well.

In conclusion, I would want to go to Potluck again with my family and other friends if there's a chance. It's worth a try.

Here's the location and contact of Potluck...

23 April 2011: Restoran Jin Xuan Hong Kong (锦选香港特极点心) specializes in Hong Kong style dim sum. Its main branch is in Kuchai Lama and it's recently renovated and rebranded. It used to be called Restaurant Kam Hin.

There are normally waiting queue outside the restaurant, especially during weekends. We were lucky enough to be the first few in the queue and we got a table in less than 10 minutes. Here are what we had (price range from RM4++ to RM4.80++)...

  • Deep-fried Radish Cake -> Taste ok. Skin not crispy enough.
  • Deep-fried Yam Puff -> Quite tasty. Crispy and fully. Recommended.
  • Char Siew Puff -> Good. Worth a try.
  • Loh Mai Kai -> Texture ok. Taste a bit too sweet.
  • Stuffed Chilli -> Average. Not spicy.

Restoran Wai Kei @ Jalan Klang Lama, Kuala Lumpur

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7

  • Environment (1-10): 7
22 April 2011: Restoran Wai Kei (威记小炒饭店) is located at a roadside shophouse next to the new Scott Garden, Old Klang Road.

We had...
  • Steamed Grouper (清蒸石斑肉) (RM25) -> Slightly overcooked. Overpriced for such a small portion. Taste not bad though.
  • Stir-fried Kangkung (RM8) -> Normal but slightly overpriced as well.
In conclusion, I won't return to Wai Kei again unless there's recommendation on specific dishes that is worth trying there.

Alexis Bistro & Wine Bar @ The Gardens Mall, Mid Valley City

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 6
  • Environment (1-10): 8
20 April 2011: I had a gathering with friends at Alexis Bistro & Wine Bar in the Gardens. It is located at a secluded corner in First Floor of the Gardens Mall, making it suitable for exclusive gathering with friends.

Here are what we had...

  • Garlic Bread (RM10++) -> I was already starving while waiting for a friend to arrive. Hence, I order a serving of garlic bread which consist of 3 pieces of bread. Since I was too hungry, I forgot to snap the photo of them. Maybe because I was really hungry, the garlic bread is delicious! I finished whole plate of it alone.
  • Penne Carbonara (RM34++) -> Tastes great but I personally think that the penne pasta is not well-cooked enough. It's acceptable though but I think it'll be better it cooked slightly longer. Worth a try.
  • Fish & Chip (RM32++) -> I love the tartar sauce. However, the layer of flour used to fry the fish is a bit too thick. I don't really like the fish.
  • Pizza Al Funghi & Pollo (RM33++) -> This pizza is made of half Al Funghi and half Pollo pizza. The Al funghi part of it consists of mushrooms, tomatoes, mozzarella, feta and white truffle oil. I personally don't really like this part of it because of the too strong taste of mushrooms. The other half of it, which is Pollo, consists of tomatoes, mozzarella, grilled chicken and capsicum. The Pollo half of it is just average. I will not recommended the pizza here.

Peter's Pork Noodle @ Brickfields

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 8.5
  • Price (1-10): 8.5
  • Environment (1-10): 6
19 April 2011: Peter's Pork Noodle is my regular eating out place for lunch. It is a food stall in Mayflower Food Court in Brickfields. I would like to emphasize that the air-ventilation system in Mayflower Food Court is very badly done. It's seriously stuffy in the food court. This indirectly encourages patrons to eat and leave. Most people do not stay long and chit chat there.

Peter's Pork Noodle is one of the most famous pork noodle in town and it's actually the best I have tried so far. I can't find better pork noodle elsewhere.

Pork meehoon soup (small, without egg) (RM4.50) -> This is really the tastiest pork noodle I have ever tried. A bowl of pork noodle consists of noodle (mee/meehoon/kuey teow/lou shu fun), pork slices, minced pork, lard, vege, preserved vege (菜哺) and egg (optional). The noodle can be soup-based or dry. Here's the current price list of Peter's Pork Noodle:
  • Small & without egg - RM4.50
  • Small & with egg - RM5.00
  • Big & without egg - RM5.50
  • Big & with egg - RM6.00

Besides the stall in Mayflower, there's also another branch of Peter's Pork Noodle in Brickfields. It is located opposite YMCA building, in Yit Seang Restaurant.

Xu Lai Xiang Vegetarian Restaurant @ Pandan Jaya

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7.5
  • Price (1-10): 7.5
  • Environment (1-10): 7
17 April 2011: It's vegetarian day today. We decided to have a simple vegetarian dinner nearby. Hence, we decided to dine at Xu Lai Xiang Vegetarian Restaurant (素来香料理坊) in Pandan Jaya.

Here are what we had...

  • Vegetarian Mutton Curry (咖喱羊肉) (RM10) -> I like this a lot. The texture of vegetarian mutton is similar to real mutton. I think the mutton is made of mushrooms because I can taste mushroom. The curry is quite tasty as well. Highly recommended.
  • Sizzling Beancurd in Oyster Sauce (铁板豆腐) (RM10) -> Not the type of beancurd I like. A bit rough and dry. Slightly overpriced.
  • Spinach in Soup (上汤苋菜) (RM6) -> Taste average. Reasonable portion and price.

Restoran LFF Seafood @ Overseas Union Garden

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7.5
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 6.5
13 April 2011: We were driving around in OUG area, seeking for a restaurant for dinner. Finally, we decided to try Restoran LFF Seafood (来发发海鲜饭店). It is located in a hawker centre opposite Shell petrol station in OUG.

Here's what we had...

  • Braised Pork Rib (红烧排骨) (RM25) -> Recommended by the waitress. We did not expect such a huge portion because there are only 2 of us. It's obviously oversized. As for the taste, it's quite good and the pork rib is quite fleshy and fatty as well. Most part of the pork is quite soft and tender. However, some parts are overcooked and a bit too dry and tough.
  • Fish Slices with Spring Onion and Ginger (姜葱鱼片) (RM12) -> Tastes average. Reasonable portion and price.
  • Spinach in Soup (上汤苋菜) (RM12) -> Taste quite good. However, the spinach is a bit too old. Portion too much for 2 of us. Slightly overpriced for a hawker centre.
In conclusion, we did not manage to finish all the dishes. I personally think that the waitress is unethical for serving us with dishes of unreasonably huge portion. She should have at least warn us on the size of the dishes so that we can order something lighter.

Here's the location and contact of LFF Seafood...

Restoran Teak Kee @ Happy Garden, Kuala Lumpur

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 8
  • Price (1-10): 7.5
  • Environment (1-10): 7.5
12 April 2011: I had my dinner at Restoran Teak Kee (德记美餚饭店). It's an air-conditioned Chinese restaurant in Meadow Park, Happy Garden.

Here's what we ordered...

  • Spicy Fish Slices (芭椒鱼片) (RM18) -> Recommended by the waitress there. Smell and taste really good! Slightly spicy (just nice) and really appetizing. Since I did not eat with rice, it's slightly salty. It taste just right if eaten with rice. When this dish is served, whole restaurant could smell it and it caused patrons from another table to order this as well. However, it's slightly heaty and might cause sore-throat. Hence, it's advised to drink plenty of water after eating this. Highly recommended dish though.
  • Stir-fried Siew Pak Choy with Taufu Pok (豆卜小白菜) (RM10) -> Well cooked vege with reasonable amount of oil, not too oily, just nice. However, the taufu pok is a bit too dry. I personally think that taufu pok is not suitable to be cooked that way. Worth a try though.
  • Old Cucumber Soup (老黄瓜汤) (RM7) -> Tasty! Well-boiled soup. Recommended.
Here's the location and details of Restoran Teak Kee @ Happy Garden...

Keong Kee Chinese Authentic Food @ Off Jalan Pudu

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 8
  • Price (1-10): 8.5
  • Environment (1-10): 6
10 April 2011: Keong Kee Bou Ban (强记补品) serves various types of Chinese Authentic Food. It is located at Jalan Changkat Thambi Dollah, Off Jalan Pudu (opposite Shaw Parade).

The Chinese authentic food served here includes wild boar, freshwater turtle, squirrel, etc... These dishes are charged at very reasonable price. Each bowl/plate (single portion) costs RM6. Here's what we had...

  • Braised Streaky Pork with Preserved Vegetable (梅菜扣肉) -> One of the best I've ever had. The taste of preserved vege is well-absorbed into the pork. Very reasonable price. Highly recommended.
  • Herbal Soup with Black Chicken (药材乌鸡汤) -> Delicious. Recommended.
  • Curry Wild Boar (咖喱山猪肉) -> Taste great and quite tender. The only complain is that there are some tiny pieces of broken bones in the meat.
  • Choy Sam -> Average but for the portion, at this price, it's very worthy.
In conclusion, Keong Kee Bou Ban serves Chinese authentic food that you can hardly find elsewhere at very reasonable price. A gentle warning from me -> please go earlier (not later than 7pm) for dinner else you will have problem getting a table. The tables are 95% occupied most of the time and the turn over rate is very high. If you go after 7pm, you'll see queue.

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7.5
  • Price (1-10): 7.5
  • Environment (1-10): 6.5
10 April 2011: After completing the hiking expedition to Broga Hill with my mom and some friends, we headed to Kedai Makanan Pokok Jati (柚木园烧鱼) for brunch. Kedai Makanan Pokok Jati is a restaurant near the summit of Broga Hill. It specializes in various types (8 types) of grilled fish, mainly Red Snapper (金凤鱼). Another specialty of this restaurant is the water source, which comes directly from the mountain. Hence, the water used here is natural mountain (mineral) water.

Here's some of the dishes that we ordered... I missed out some because the battery of my camera was dead while I was half-way snapping the photos of the food...

  • Salted Baked Grilled Fish (盐焗烧鱼) (RM18-small) -> Red Snapper fish is very fresh. It's also perfectly baked that the fish is very juicy and fine. It tastes just right, tasty but not too salty. Worth a try.
  • Chilli Padi Grilled Fish (小辣椒烧鱼) (RM18-small) -> Similar to the previous, it's fresh and perfectly grilled. The seasoning using chilli padi makes it really taste buds triggering and appetizing, yet not too hot. Recommended.
  • Specialty Steamed Kampung Chicken (招牌蒸鸡) (RM18-half) -> The chicken itself is really bony that I could hardly taste any flesh. Tastes average.
  • Steamed Kampung Chicken with Black Pepper (黑胡椒蒸鸡) (RM18-half) -> Similarly, the chicken is too bony. As for the taste, it is unreasonably too hot and spicy that cause immediate discomfort to the throat. Not recommended.
  • Fried Squid (炸苏东) (RM22-large) -> I did not manage to snap the photo of this. However, this is quite crispy and tastes not bad.
  • Yau Mak (腐乳油麦) (RM12-large) -> I did not manage to snap this as well. Tastes normal.

9 April 2011: Six Happiness Garden (六福苑酒家) is a Chinese restaurant located in Ampang Waterfront. It's a double-storey building with basement carpark. Six Happiness Garden is owned by Empurau Fish Restaurant (Ampang) Sdn. Bhd. Some people might mix up Six Happiness Garden (六福苑酒家) and Six Happiness Restaurant (六福鱼翅酒家), thinking they are the same. In fact, they are totally different chains of restaurants, under different management.

There's an ongoing promotion in Six Happiness Garden where selected dishes (small) are priced at flat rate of RM15. Here are the dishes we selected from the promotional menu...

  • Beancurd with Seafood in Claypot (海鲜烩豆腐煲) -> Fresh seafood, fine and soft beancurd. Tasty gravy. At this price, it's really value for money.

  • Yau Mark (油麦) (RM5) -> Normal. Very reasonable price.
  • Steamed Fish Head (清蒸松鱼头) (RM22) -> Fish is fresh. Although there's normally quite a lot of bones in this type of fish, it's quite easy to remove them. The flesh is quite thick as well. Recommended.

The basement parking in Casa Utama costs RM5 per entry. However, Organic Recipe will refund this RM5 if you dine there and show them the parking receipt when paying.

Here's what we had...

  • Carbonara with Mushrooms Spaghetti (RM12.90++) -> Taste quite good. The taste of mushroom is just nice, not too strong. I've tried mushrooms spaghetti somewhere else where the taste of mushrooms is so strong that I can't taste the carbonara sauce.
  • Crabmeat Tao Fu (RM11.90++) -> Quite delicious. Tao fu is soft, fine and tender.
  • Hokkien Noodle (RM9.90++) -> It doesn't look, smell and taste like Hokkien noodle. It's more similar to Cantonese noodle. I personally did not enjoy this.

2 April 2011: I had a gathering dinner with friends at Tsuruya Japanese Restaurant. Tsuruya is a cozy Japanese restaurant in E-Gate, Penang.

We had...
  • Kimuchi Ramen (RM16++) -> Solid and springy ramen. Tasty and appetizing soup. Recommended.
  • Gyu Karakuchi Ramen (RM18++) -> Beef pieces are quite thick and tough. Beef slices will be preferable. Soup is very tasty though.
  • White Dragon Maki (RM20++) -> Taste not bad. Too big pieces with too much rice. Very filling and cannot fit whole piece of maki into mouth. I would prefer those that I can eat with only one mouthful.
Green tea here is free of charge.
