Rendezvous Steak Garden @ Jalan Kampung Pandan

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 7
25 May 2011: Rendezvous Steak Garden (相见欢) is restaurant with open-concept, serving western and local favourites. It is located in Jalan Kampung Pandan, next to Chateau De Caffeinees. The ambience here is quite nice and cosy. You can choose to sit under a tree, inside a gigantic bird cage, in a swing, etc... Suitable place for casual gathering with friends and family.

Here are what we had...

Grilled Black Pepper Chicken (RM11.80++) -> Chicken is juicy. Black pepper sauce is quite tasty. Not bad.

Cheese Macaroni (RM11.80++) -> The taste of cream and cheese did not absorb into the macaroni. Macaroni itself is almost tasteless. Besides, macaroni is slightly overcooked. Not recommended.

Grilled Ikan Pari (RM16++) -> The fish itself is average. Sambal spread on top of the grilled fish is quite tasty but the amount is not enough for this big piece of fish. However, the little bowl of sauce served together actually stinks. I'm not sure what sauce is that but both me and my bf think that it stinks.

Mango Juice (RM4.20++) -> Too diluted. Can hardly taste mango.
Kiwi Juice (RM4.20++) -> Similar to mango juice. Too diluted. I can only taste sugar...

Here's the location of Rendezvous Steak Garden...
Address: Jalan Kampung Pandan, 55100 Kuala Lumpur.

Kim Lian Kee @ Petaling Street

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 8
  • Price (1-10): 7.5
  • Environment (1-10): 7
21 May 2011: I have been planning to try Kim Lian Kee's Hokkien Mee since some time ago. I finally got the chance to go there for lunch. Kim Lian Kee (金莲记) serves the most famous Hokkien Mee in town. It is located near Petaling Street. Kim Lian Kee originally opens in the evening. However, there's a new Kim Lian Kee across the road, that operates during day time.

Besides, Kim Lian Kee has a branch in Lot 10 Hutong as well.

Here comes the food...

Hokkien Mee (RM7) -> Being the most famous Hokkien Mee in town, this is indeed delicious. The sauce really absorb deep into the noodles. However, it is a bit too oily but I understand that this is unavoidable for Hokkien Mee.

Wat Tan Hor (RM7) -> Average. Gravy is too watery. Overpriced. Not recommended. After trying this, my advice is to stick with their Hokkien Mee, don't try others :P

Here's the location of Kim Lian Kee Hokkien Mee...
Address: 92, Jalan Hang Lekir, 50000 Kuala Lumpur

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7.5
  • Price (1-10): 6.5
  • Environment (1-10): 8
19 May 2011: I had a gathering lunch with friend at Malones. Malones is an Irish Restaurant serving an array of pork free authentic Irish specialties. The bar has a variety of creamy thirst quenching drafts.

Here are what we had...

Seafood Chowder (RM11.90++) -> South-east Irish style chowder with clams, mussels, salmon and white fish. Chowder is very creamy and tasty. Bread is soft and tender. Worth a try.

Beer Battered Fish & Chips (RM23.90++) -> A generous piece of dory fillet dipped in beer batter and golden-fried to perfection. Served with fries and tartar sauce. Really huge piece of dory fillet. Quite tasty but I totally can't taste beer. Worth a try.

Here's the location and contact of Malones @ Sooka Sentral...

Hachigo @ Suria KLCC

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 6.5
  • Price (1-10): 6.5
  • Environment (1-10): 7
18 May 2011: My colleagues and I went to Hachigo at Signatures Food Court, Suria KLCC for lunch. It's all on my colleague, who has many Hachigo cash vouchers to be utilized. It is a Japanese 'quick-service' restaurant serving wide array of bento sets, donburi, udon, snacks, etc... The meal sets here, that include a main course, miso soup and soft drinks, are price at around RM11.90-RM18.90.

Here are what we had...

  • Salmon Teppan Bento -> The piece of salmon is a bit too small. Taste normal.
  • Gyu Yakiniku Bento -> Huge portion of beef slices but they are too tough/hard.
  • Chicken Katsu Bento -> Quite many pieces of chicken but too dry and rough.
  • Beef Garlic Fried Rice -> Beef too tough but garlic fried rice is quite tasty.
  • Ebi Don -> The prawns are over-fried and the flour is too thick. It taste more like fried-flour than fried-prawns.
In general, the rice served here is not Japanese rice. Besides, the rice is too soft that some looks more like 'ketupat' (packed/compressed rice).

TTK Bak Kut Teh @ Pandan Jaya

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 8
  • Price (1-10): 7.5
  • Environment (1-10): 7
16 May 2011: TTK Bak Kut Teh is one of my favourite bak kut teh place. It is located in Pandan Jaya. It is the famous bak kut teh which had been operating in Pudu market for years before moving to Pandan Jaya. Similar to other Bak Kut Teh shops, TTK is not air-conditioned. However, this restaurant is not stuffy because it is a corner shop and open-air. Besides, the cleanliness here is also well taken care of.

Here are what we had...

  • Steamed Fish Head (RM24) -> I don't really like this. There's a bit of muddy taste of typical freshwater fish. For the same type of fish, I prefer those at Ah Wang Bak Kut Teh.
  • Double-boiled Bak Kut Teh with Extra Herbs (RM32) -> This is the most famous didsh here. The soup is much thicker and tastier than bak kut teh in other shops. However, it is a bit costly as compared to normal bak kut teh. Worth a try.
  • Tau Fu Pok -> Soft, fine and tasty. I like this. Recommended.
  • Yau Char Gwai -> Average.
  • Vegetables -> Normal.
  • Yam Rice (RM1.60) -> Quite tasty. Worth a try.
Here's the location and contact of TTK Bak Kut Teh @ Pandan Jaya...Address: Jalan Pandan 8, Pandan Jaya, 55100 Kuala Lumpur.

  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 8
15 May 2011: I went to Hee Lai Ton Restaurant (Pudu) 喜来登(半山芭)海鲜酒家 for dinner with my family. It is located at 3rd Floor of Shaw Parade.

Here are what we had...

  • Pork Knuckle (猪手) (RM16++) -> Not bad. My dad likes this.
  • Deep-fried Prawn with Butter Sauce (奶油虾球) (RM30++) -> Prawns quite fresh. Too bad, the butter sauce spoiled the whole dish. The deep-fried butter sauce is too salty and not crispy enough. Overpriced.
  • Seafood Noodle (海鲜焖生面) (RM15++) -> Quite tasty.
  • Spinach with Soup (上汤苋菜) (RM12++) -> Tasty. Fresh and young spinach.

  • Environment (1-10): 6.5
14 May 2011: We went to Ah Wang Bak Kut Teh (亚旺肉骨茶) again. This time with my parents. My dad loves fish head. Here are what we had...

  • Assam Steamed Fish Head (Medium) (RM25) -> Fish is really tasty. Doesn't taste like a freshwater fish at all. Assam sauce is appetizing. Recommended. Anyway, I still prefer assam steamed fish at Chong Yuan Seafood Restaurant.
  • Bak Kut Teh (Portion for 2 pax) (RM18) -> Very tasty. The soup is refillable.
  • Pig Trotters (RM9) -> Normal. My dad ordered this and ate most of it. I didn't eat much.
  • Taufu with Spring Onion Oil (RM5) -> Normal.
  • Yau Char Gwai (RM1.50) -> Very tasty and crispy. One of the best yau char gwai I've had so far.
  • Vegetables (Medium) (RM7) -> Normal.

Kedai Makanan Ah Loy (Air-Cond) @ Overseas Union Garden

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7.5
  • Price (1-10): 8
  • Environment (1-10): 7.5
14 May 2011: We went to Ah Loy (亚来咖哩面冷气饭店) in OUG for lunch. It specializes mainly in curry noodles and yong tau foo. Since it is air-conditioned, it's a good choice to have lunch during hot afternoon.

Here's the curry noodle...

I ordered curry bihun, without cockles. It comes with pieces of chicken and tau fu pok. The price is around RM5 per bowl. The curry is quite tasty and very thick. I guess the curry is cooked with quite a lot of santan. I was already full after eating half of it. The thick curry is very filling.

KFC O.R. Chicken Chop @ KL Sentral

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 7.5
  • Environment (1-10): 7.5
13 May 2011: My colleagues and I went to KFC for lunch. We have been planning to try the new O.R. Chicken Chop and I want to get the foldable trolley bag for my mom. Here's the O.R. Chicken Chop Combo offered by KFC.

Here's how the O.R. Chicken Chop actually looks like...

The chicken chop itself taste exactly the same like the chicken breast used in the chicken burgers in KFC. The mushroom gravy is actually the gravy used with whipped potato. I think that the chicken chop and mushroom gravy don't really goes together well. The gravy did not add any plus points to the chicken chop. I think it will be better if KFC makes some effort to introduce different gravy that goes with the chicken chop.

Thomas Western @ Restoran Ong Lay, OUG

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 8
  • Price (1-10): 7.5
  • Environment (1-10): 6.5
11 May 2011: Thomas Western is a stall in Restoran Ong Lay, OUG. It serves simple and tasty western food at reasonable price. The owner of the stall is called Thomas Wong. Sometimes, he himself will be the chef. However, most of the time, he'll ask his staffs to do the cooking under his supervision.

Here's the menu and price list of the food available at Thomas Western:

Here are what we ordered...

Chicken Cordon Bleu (RM11) -> Chicken meat stuffed with cheese and deep-fried till golden in colour. Chicken meat inside is very juicy and tasty. It goes just right with the sauce. However, the skin is slightly hard and not crispy enough. Although there's room for improvement, I'll still recommend this.

Grilled Chicken Chop with Black Pepper Sauce (RM8.50) -> Very juice and tasty chicken meat. The black pepper sauce taste just right and goes perfectly with the grilled chicken. Not too salty, not too hot, very tasty, taste just right! Besides, I would like to specifically mention the mashed potato. I'm not a potato lover. I normally don't even eat french fries. However, I love the mashed potato here. It's very soft, fine and goes well the with mushroom sauce.

Esquire Kitchen @ Pandan Indah

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 6.5
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 7.5
8 May 2011: We went to Esquire Kitchen at Pandan Indah for Mother's day celebration dinner. My mom selected Esquire Kitchen because of the Herbal Chicken in the Parents day promotional set. We have been searching desperately for good herbal chicken but we have yet to find any. Esquire Kitchen serves home-style Shanghainese and Sze Chuan dishes.

Here are what we had...

  • Steamed Herbal Chicken -> The chicken itself is almost tasteless. All of us added soy sauce onto the chicken for better taste. The sauce has got mild herbal taste though, but definitely not enough for this type of herbal chicken. Disappointing.
  • Deep Fried Fish Slices with Orange Mayonnaise -> The fish is too salty.
  • Egg Taufu with Vegetarian Abalone -> Not bad.
  • Sharkfin Omelette -> Quite tasty. I'm a hardcore egg-lover. I like almost anything cooked with egg.
  • Wan Yee Kailan -> Normal.
For Worldcard member, there's free dessert with Parents' Day Set. The available options for dessert are Guai Ling Gou and Tau Fu Fah. Both taste quite good.

Ming Kee Hokkien Mee @ Restoran Ong Lay, OUG

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 8.5
  • Price (1-10): 8.5
  • Environment (1-10): 6.5
2 May 2011: Ming Kee Hokkien Mee serves my favourite Hokkien Mee. It is a stall in Restoran Ong Lay, OUG. Ming Kee only opens in the evening.

Here comes the food...

  • Hokkien Mee (RM5.50) -> Really tasty inside out. Taste and feel just right. Neither too oily nor too dry. I will crave for it if I don't eat it for some time.
  • Cantonese Kuey Teow (滑蛋河) (RM5.50) -> One of my favourite as well. Kuey Teow itself is tasty enough. The gravy is also thick and taste great. Yummy yummy!
However, something that I would to emphasize is the consistency of the QC here. Sometimes the food might not taste as good, especially when there's long queue.

Here's the location of Ming Kee Hokkien Mee @ OUG...
Address: Restoran Ong Lay, Medan Hujan Rahmat, Overseas Union Garden (OUG), 58200 Kuala Lumpur.

The Library @ Mid Valley Megamall

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7.5
  • Price (1-10): 7.5
  • Environment (1-10): 7.5
2 May 2011: I had a lunch gathering with friends at The Library, Mid Valley Megamall. The Library is mainly a bar/bistro in the evening and a restaurant during day time. We decided to have our gathering here because there's a Buy 1 Free 1 Lunch Promotion. This promotion allow us to buy 1 item on the menu and free 1 item at same or lower price. Dessert is not included in the promotion.

We did not expect much from the food here because The Library is a place for drinking, not for eating. Here are what we had...

  • Grilled Creole Fish (RM29.90++) -> Tilapia fish fillet marinated with Cajun spices, served with fries & salad bouquet. I love the sauce, very tasty and appetizing. The fish is not bad, a bit too salty but still within acceptable range. Worth a try if the lunch promotion is still on, else this is a bit pricey. Fyi, this is chef recommendation.
  • Spaghetti Carbonara (RM27.90++) -> Aldante pasta, cooked with smoked turkey ham and sauteed button mushrooms, in thick creamy sauce. This is our favourite dish here. Taste just right. Not too plain, not too cheesy. A lot better than expected. Recommended.
  • Pasta Funghi Con Olio (RM19.90++) -> Slightly spicy but overall taste a bit too plain. Edible but not recommended, although this is chef recommendation dish.
  • Warm Peach and Banana Crumble (RM19++) -> Oatmeal, banana and peach served warm with cream and vanilla ice-cream. I'm not a peach and banana lover so I did not try this. Quoted from a friend "too hard". She demonstrated on how hard is it and I can conclude that it's unreasonably too hard to be eaten.
Generally, the food here is much better than expected. Worth a try if the Buy 1 Free 1 Lunch Promotion is still on.

Prego @ Westin Hotel, Kuala Lumpur

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 6
  • Environment (1-10): 8.5
1 May 2011: Prego has been in our "to go" list since 2 yrs ago. We finally had dinner at Prego. It's claimed to be the best Italian Restaurant in town. We were seated at a table that allow us to have a clear view of the "Show" kitchen, where we can watch how the food is prepared.

Here are what we had...

  • Fettuccine Carbonara (RM31++) -> The fettuccine is Prego home-made fresh egg pasta. However, it is too thin and soft. I don't really like the texture of this home-made fettuccine. It reminds me of "Pan Mee" that's soaked too long in the sauce/soup. The fettuccine stick together like a whole big bunch of flour. This is such a disappointment since I've been looking forward to dine here for some time. The carbonara sauce tastes great though. It might be better if we order Spaghetti Carbonara instead of Fettuccine.
  • Calzone Bomba Pizza (RM34++) -> Consists of turkey ham, zucchini, artichoke, basil, pesto sauce, tomato and mozzarella. We selected this pizza because it's labelled as chef recommendation. It looks unique and tastes great. However, the pizza base is soft and soggy, not crunchy at all. I'm not sure whether it's meant to be like that. I personally prefer crunchy pizza base.
  • Bread with tomato sauce -> Complimentary starter from Prego. Not bad.
  • Zuccotta al Cioccolata (RM20++) -> Prego's famous chocolate mud pie. If I were to give this a name, I'll call it chocolate ice-cream cake with coffee powder. This is total disappointment for me. I did not expect it to be an ice-cream cake. Besides, it tastes more like a coffee cake than a chocolate cake to me. Note: I'm not a coffee lover.
  • Black Coffee (RM11++) -> Quoted from my bf "This coffee is good. I enjoy drinking it even without sugar."
In conclusion... the food we ordered are generally disappointing. Maybe it's our fault, not knowing what's supposed to be ordered. Anyway, we really enjoy watching the "Show" kitchen. Maybe we will go again some other time to try some other dishes.

Note:
1. American Express Credit Cards can enjoy 20% savings on total food bill. Valid until 31 December 2011.

Chateau De Caffeinees @ Jalan Kampung Pandan

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 6.5
  • Price (1-10): 6.5
  • Environment (1-10): 7
1 May 2011: We went to Chateau De Caffeinees for lunch. It is a place that offers coffee and food in relaxing environment. It is located in Jalan Kampung Pandanm, next to Rendezvous Steak Garden. The exterior design of the restaurant is nicely done. It's a very pleasing garden. However, the interior deco of the restaurant (e.g. floor, doors, windows, etc...) is slightly old and run down.

Caffeinees offers set lunch that includes selected main meal, gelato and drinks (iced lemon tea/long black/english tea). The set lunch that we ordered is priced at RM23++...

  • Caffeinees Baked Rice -> Rice served with fried chicken wing and salad. This is a chef recommended item. However, I think this is disappointed. The skin of fried chicken wing is crispy and quite tasty but the chicken meat itself is tasteless. The baked rice is too soggy and very filling but not very tasty. I'm not sure what the exact word to describe the taste of the rice, I just don't enjoy it.
  • Long Black -> Average.
  • Gelato (Mango) -> I love this! Very fine and creamy gelato with natural mango taste. It's a ready made gelato from JezRipe. I'm planning to look for this gelato, buy in bulk and store in my own fridge. Highly recommended!
Besides the set lunch, we ordered some ala carte items as well...

  • Carribbean Grilled Chicken (RM20++) -> Grilled chicken chop with creamy mild spicy home specialty sauce. This is another chef recommended item. Also another very disappointing one. The grilled chicken itself is quite juicy and tender. It's acceptable for the grilled chicken itself to be tasteless. Normally, the taste of grilled chicken is highly dependent on the sauce. However, the sauce is a complete failure. It's literally TASTELESS!
  • Green Apple-Lime Ice Blended (RM8.50++) -> Another chef recommendation. The juice is diluted by the ice although I drink it immediately after it's served. This juice taste more like iced water...
  • Flourless Chocolate Cake (RM9++) -> I like this. Soft, fine, creamy and 'chocolatie'. Worth a try.
In conclusion, I personally think that the chef recommendations are misleading and disappointing.
