Kinnaree Thai Restaurant @ Jaya One, Petaling Jaya

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 8
29 August 2011: I bought 2 "[50% Off] RM25 for RM50 worth of Authentic Thai Cuisine from Kinnaree Thai Restaurant" vouchers from Groupon. Kinnaree Thai Restaurant offers wide variety of Thai gourmet in a cosy and relaxed atmosphere. It is shortlisted one of the best Thai restaurant in Kuala Lumpur for 2010.

Here are what we ordered...

  • Pandan Chicken (RM12++) -> Marinated chicken wrapped in pandan leaves served with ginger and sesame sauce. RM4 per piece with minimum order of 3 pieces per table. Not well-marinated enough. I can easily find something similar in other Thai restaurant at cheaper price. Nothing impressive. I still prefer pandan chicken in Amarin Heavenly Thai and Imperial Rama.
  • Pineapple Fried Rice (RM16++) -> Rice not well-fried enough, still very soft and sticky. Taste average. Definitely not the best pineapple fried rice I've ever had. Not worth the price.
  • Green Curry Chicken (RM24++) -> Grilled chicken topped with green curry in coconut milk. Really huge portion, too much for 2 person. Big pieces of chicken breast meat. A very filling dish but not satisfying. I don't really like the taste. Too much of coconut milk and covered the taste of green curry. What a great disappointment. We couldn't even finish half of this. The green curry chicken in Amarin Heavenly Thai is still my favourite.
  • Steamed Fish with Lime (RM42++) -> Steamed boneless seabass with spicy lime sauce. I love the boneless part of it. Other than that, this is another disappointment. The fish itself is not fresh. Besides, it's served without any heating tools at the bottom, causing it to cool very fast especially in air-conditioned environment. This is a basic practice in any restaurant that serves fish.
  • Mixed Vegetables with Oyster Sauce (RM14++) -> This definitely the best dish of the meal. I know this sounds sarcastic but it's the fact...
  • Seafood Tom Yam (RM14++) -> Taste average. Not hot and spicy enough. I still prefer tom yam soup in Imperial Rama.
In conclusion, I don't think I'll return to Kinnaree Thai Restaurant again. It's not worth it even with discount vouchers.

Town Steamboat Restaurant @ Penang

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 7.5
  • Environment (1-10): 6
27 August 2011: Town Steamboat Restaurant (火锅之家) in Macalister Road, Penang serves buffet steamboat, barbeque and wide variety of readily cooked food. Considering the range of food selection available, the price is very reasonable. Here's the price list:
  • Height <100cm : Free of charge
  • Height 100cm - 120cm : RM4.90
  • Height 120cm - 140cm : RM8.90
  • Height >140cm : RM22.90
  • Senior Citizen >55 years old : RM14.90

Despite the huge compound of the restaurant, it is always fully occupied. You are advised to make reservation in advance to avoid disappointed or getting a poorly located table which is too far away from the food. Since you have to barbeque your own food, the place tend to get oily, stuffy and smelly. Be ready to bath thoroughly from head to toe after the meal. Besides, there are also barbeque pork and satay cooked on the spot. You have to queue up to get them. The barbeque pork taste good but a bit too fat. The satay tastes not bad as well.

Here are the raw ingredients for steamboat and barbeque...

The ingredients for steamboat includes variety of fresh seafood, meat, processed food (fish balls, meat balls, sausage, crabstick, etc...), vegetables, noodles and eggs. As for barbeque, the meat are well-marinated.

Besides raw ingredients, there are wide selection of ready-to-eat food such as fried noodles, rice, bak kut teh, yau char guai, egg tarts, fries, dim sum, ice-cream, herbal jelly, pudding, drinks, etc... Most of them are generally satisfactory.

Maxim Dim Sum Restaurant @ Pekaka, Penang

Ocean Green Restaurant @ Penang

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 8.5
  • Price (1-10): 8
  • Environment (1-10): 8
26 August 2011: Ocean Green Restaurant (海洋青海鲜楼) is a restaurant under the management of Paramount Hotel. It is one of the best seafood restaurant in Penang Island. It serves fresh seafood caught daily from the sea surrounding the island. This is my family's favourite restaurant in Penang. We love the food, as well as, the breath-taking beach-side scenery here.

Here are what we had...

Chicken Satay (RM15) -> The chicken satay here costs RM1 each. This is our "must-order" item every time we are here. This is the best satay I have ever eaten. The uniqueness of this satay is that the sauce is applied on the satay while they are grilled over charcoal fire. The meat is juicy and tender while the sauce is well-absorbed into the satay.

  • Steamed Grouper (清蒸石斑) (RM63) -> The seasonal price of live grouper is RM9 per 100g. The fish is really fresh and tasty. Highly recommended.
  • Fresh Boiled Tiger Prawns (蒸虎虾) (RM8) -> 3 pieces of really fresh tiger prawns. The original taste of the prawn itself is good enough without any additional flavouring.
  • Sizzling Oyster (铁板耗) (RM12) -> My dad likes this because it's not oily at all, unlike those commonly found elsewhere that are too oily.
  • Steamed Noodles (焖生面) (RM12) -> I personally don't really like this. Noodle a bit too soft and not springy enough. Tastes average.
  • Stir-fried Kangkung (清炒蕹菜) (RM10) -> Very young kangkung. This is the first time I eat kangkung without any thick stems that are commonly found in kangkung.

Cheong Wah Seafood Restaurant @ Pusat Bandar Puchong

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 8.5
  • Price (1-10): 7.5
  • Environment (1-10): 8
20 August 2011: Cheong Wah Seafood Restaurant (中华酒家) is located in Pusat Bandar Puchong, opposite Tesco Extra Puchong. It's a huge pillar-less hall with high plaster ceiling decorated with chandelier. It's specially designed to cater for events such as weddings.

I was told that the food served here is good at reasonable price. Hence, I decided to bring my family there and give it a try. Here are what we had....

Steamed "Dragon-Tiger" Grouper (清蒸龙虎斑) (RM126) -> This is a live fish with the seasonal price of RM14 per 100g. This is really fresh and tasty. Worth the price. Recommended.

  • Deep-fried Shell-less Prawns with Oat (麦片虾球) (RM20) -> Prawns are big, fresh and tasty. Oats are tasty and crispy. For this huge portion, the price is really reasonable. Recommended.
  • Braised Pork (东坡肉) (RM20) -> Generous portion of tasty meat. Very reasonable price. Recommended.
  • Bean Curd (胜瓜豆腐) (RM12) -> No complain. Tasty and fine home-made bean curd. Good.
  • Stir-fried Young Potato Leaves (清炒树苗) (RM12) -> Vege is young and tasty. No complain.
This meal is really satisfying. It is officially added into my list of favourite Chinese restaurant in Klang Valley. I will definitely go again to try out some other dishes.

  • Sze Chuan Dumpling (四川龙抽手) (RM5.80++) -> Looks spicy but actually not spicy at all. It tastes sourish and I personally don't like this.
  • Wantan Noodle (粤式细蓉面) (RM6.80++) -> Normal wantan noodle just that it's smaller bowl. Founded by the Cantonese.
  • Fried Fish Cake (家乡煎鱼饼) (RM6.80++) -> Skin slightly over-fried and difficult to cut.
  • Fried Yam Puff (炸芋盏) (RM4.80++) -> Quite tasty but not fluffy enough.
  • Pan Fried Radish Cake (煎萝卜糕) (RM4.80++) -> Not bad.
  • BBQ Pork Pastry (香麻叉烧酥) (RM4.80++) -> Average.
  • JadePot Paper Pot (一品纸火锅) (RM8.80++) -> Taste like normal ABC soup.
  • Trio Yong Tau Foo (酿三宝) (RM8.80++) -> Average.

Amarin Heavenly Thai @ Mid Valley Megamall

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 8
  • Price (1-10): 7.5
  • Environment (1-10): 8
11 August 2011: This is my first time Amarin Heavenly Thai since it's closed for renovation few months ago. However, I still prefer the ambiance before the renovation. I personally think that it's a bit too dark now. The ceiling, walls, tables and even the staffs' uniform are black in colour. I was hoping that the food doesn't disappoint me.

Here are what we had...

  • Pandan Leaves Chicken (RM18++) -> As good as before, juicy, tender and delicious. It's tasty eaten with or without the Thai chilli sauce. One of my favourite pandan leaves chicken. Highly recommended.
  • Pineapple Fried Rice (RM16.90++) -> Pineapple fried rice with prawns, topped with chicken floss. The rice is very well fried and tasty. Prawns are fresh. Recommended.
  • Seafood Tom Yam (RM13.90++) -> The soup is thick and tastes just right. Recommended.
In conclusion, we are satisfied with the food served in this meal and Amarin Heavenly Thai remains as my favourite Thai restaurant in Klang Valley.
