Cheers Palace Restaurant @ Cheras

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 7.5
  • Environment (1-10): 7.5
30 August 2012: Cheers Palace (饮胜皇宫海鲜酒楼) offers 50% discount for dim sum on weekdays. I was tempted by this promotion hence decided to have a try with my family. Cheers Palace is a restaurant under the Unique Seafood group of management, which specializes in live seafood selections. It is located on Jalan Cheras, next to the furniture mall.

Here are the steamed dim sum dishes that we had, with the normal price (before discount):

  • Steamed Salted Egg Yolk Custard Bun (金黄流沙包) (RM5.80++) -> Below expectation. Egg yolk custard filling not fluid enough.
  • Steamed Siew Mai (港式蒸烧卖) (RM7.80++) -> Average.
  • Steamed Prawn Dumpling (蹄爽鲜虾饺) (RM7.80++) -> Not bad. Prawns quite fresh.
  • Scallop Dumpling (鲜虾带子饺) (RM7.80++) -> Quite good.
  • Steamed Glutinous Rice with Chicken and Mushroom (风味糯米鸡) (RM5.80++) -> Tender and tasty. Worth a try.
  • Steamed BBQ Pork Bun (蜜汁叉烧包) (RM6.80++) -> Quite tasty.
  • Steamed Fish Balls with Vegetables (时蔬蒸鱼卖) (RM5.80++) -> Texture quite springy and tastes good as well.
  • Steamed Pork Ribs with Peanut (花生蒸排骨) (RM6.80++) -> Average.
  • Braised Fish Dumpling with Chinese Herbs (当归鱼汤饺) (RM6.80++) -> My dad doesn't like the soup but I like it. Fish dumpling too soft, not solid enough.
Here are some fried dim sum that we had:

  • Stir-fried Carrot Cake with Bean Sprout in X.O. Sauce (XO酱炒萝卜糕) (RM7.80++) -> It will be better if carrot cake is cut into smaller pieces so that the taste of XO sauce can absorb getter.
  • Oven Baked Mini Egg Tart (迷你蛋挞仔) (RM5.80++) -> Skin quite fluffy. Egg filling fine and taste. Worth a try.
  • Baked BBQ Pork Puff (蜜汁叉烧角) (RM6.80++) -> BBQ pork tasty and juicy.
  • Pan-fried Carrot Cake (香煎萝卜糕) (RM5.80++) -> Average.
  • Deep-fried Yam Puff (五香荔于角) (RM6.80++) -> Yam puff fluffy and crispy. Filling not bad.
One point that I would like to comment and emphasize here is the chilli sauce provided here. It's too sourish and doesn't go well with the dim sum. This seriously affect my appetite and mood for the meal. I personally prefer something similar to "Kampung Koh" chilli sauce.

As for the price, I won't go for it at normal price. At 50% discount, dim sum here is definitely worth a try.

Xiao Shi Fu Steamboat @ Pandan Indah

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 6.5
  • Environment (1-10): 7
18 May 2011: I bought "Steamboat Set (4Pax) @ Xiao Shi Fu Steamboat" voucher from Everyday for RM40. Xiao Shi Fu (小师傅) is a clean, comfortable and cozy steamboat restaurant in Pandan Indah.

Here are what we had using the voucher...

We chose their homemade pork soup as the soup-base. It is really tasty because it's boiled for long hours using big pieces of pork bones. The taste of the soup doesn't come from artificial flavouring. The soup itself is worth for me to patron Xiao Shi Fu again.

As for the ingredients, I would say they are reasonably good. However, putting aside the voucher that I bought, by looking at the menu, the food here is slightly overpriced. The voucher is value for money though.

Please find the menu as below:

Ciao Ristorante @ Jalan Kampung Pandan

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 6
  • Environment (1-10): 9
13 May 2012: Ciao, which is the oldest Italian restaurant in Kuala Lumpur, resembles a rustic Italian country house with a cozy garden and man-made lake overlooking the golf course. I drive past it almost everyday when on my way home and I notice it's closed for private function quite often.

I like to dine here during special occasion. This round, I was there with my mom and my husband to celebrate mother's day.

Here are what we had...

  • Costiera (RM32++) -> Pizza with tomato, mozzarella and mixed seafood. This is just an average seafood pizza to me. Nothing special.
  • Fettuccine al Salmone (RM36++) -> Fresh fettuccine with smoked salmon, tomato and cream sauce. Fettuccine is too soft, maybe it's my personal preference, I don't really appreciate fresh pasta. Salmone and the sauce are quite tasty though. Mixture of cream sauce and tomato makes it creamy and appetizing at the same time. Worth a try.
  • Branzino al Cartoccio (RM54++) -> Seabass fillet baked in aluminum foil with garlic, capers, kalamata olives, anchovies, herbs, fresh tomatoes and splash of white wine. Small piece of fillet with ordinary taste. Definitely not worth the price.
  • Chocolate Lava Cake (RM24++) -> This is my favourite dessert. The chocolate sauce filling is still as warm, thick and rich, as usual. However, I remember it used to be better during my previous visit. If not mistaken, mild orange flavouring or grind orange peel is added to this chocolate cake. Unfortunately, I don't like this change.

Rating:

  • Price (1-10): 7.5
  • Environment (1-10): 8
12 May 2012: Cheong Wah Seafood Restaurant (中华酒家) is located in Pusat Bandar Puchong, opposite Tesco Extra Puchong. We were there to celebrate Mother's Day with my mother-in-law in advanced.

Here are what we had...

  • Herbal Chicken -> Taste not bad. However, not as good as the one in Ye Look Restaurant, Sri Petaling. The herbal gravy is not as thick and tasty.
  • Teow Chew Steamed Fish -> Fish quite fresh. Taste quite good.
  • Tauhu with Minced Meat -> Texture is fine and tender. Taste is good as well.
  • Stirf-ried Potato Leaves -> Average fried vege.
These 4 dishes cost at total of RM65++. Since the bill is not itemized, I'm not able to list the price of each dishes.

Noble House @ Off Jalan Imbi, KL

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 9.5
  • Price (1-10): 6.5
  • Environment (1-10): 8.5
22 April 2012: Noble House (阳城酒家) is a restaurant under Oriental Group of Restaurants. It serves fine Cantonese cuisine with impressive contemporary setting. It has been voted as one of the best restaurant in Malaysia and Asia for few consecutive years. This is also one of my favourite Chinese restaurant in Klang Valley.

Since there are 6 of us where 4 are ladies, we decided to order the lunch set for 4 pax. The set costs RM148++. Here are the dishes that come with the set...

  • Soup of The Day (阳城老火靓汤) -> Very tasty and appetizing.
  • Pan-Fried Chilean Cod Fish with Pomelo Sauce (杨枝智利鳕鱼) -> Fish is fresh, fine and juicy. Fried just right. Taste good.
  • Baby Duck with Romaine Green Salad (皇子鸭伴罗马生菜) -> Duck is tender, juicy and tasty.
  • Braised Spinach with Crab Meat & Egg (月光波菜) -> Taste alright.
  • Baked Rice with Abalone (鲍鱼焗饭) -> This is a unique dish. Baked rice is placed in a shell. It is also very tasty.
  • Chilled Honeydew with Sago (蜜瓜西米露) -> Honeydew and sago are fresh. Taste just right.

Simple Life Healthy Vegetarian Restaurant@ Sunway Pyramid

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7.5
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 7.5
9 April 2012: Simple Life serves vegetarian dishes using organic ingredients. It is located at LG2, Blue Atrium section of Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall. The environment here is very clean, cosy and relaxing. It's a good place for those who are vegetarian and health conscious.

Here are what we had...

  • Vegetables Curry Pot (RM15.90++)  -> Simple Life's homemade curry cooked with coconut milk, cashew nuts, organic cabbage, long bean, organic lady's finger, eggplant, pumpkin, yam and organic bean curd puff. It also comes with multi-grain rice, daily side dishes, energy soup and fruit. This is quite tasty, worth a try.

  • Tomyam Brown Rice Bee Hoon (RM13.90++) -> Brown rice bee hoon with homemade tomyam soup, straw mushroom, long cabbage, tomato, celery, baby corn and coriander. Although not as good as standard non-vegetarian tomyam, this is worth a try though.

Wedding Dinner Food Tasting @ Sunway Putra Hotel, KL

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 9
  • Price (1-10): -
  • Environment (1-10): 8.5
17 March 2012: My husband and I had decided to hold our wedding dinner in Sunway Putra Hotel. It used to be Legend Hotel, which is located on Jalan Putra, opposite PWTC. It was taken over by Sunway Group last year and renamed to Sunway Putra Hotel.

Our wedding dinner will be held on 6th May 2012. We signed up the wedding dinner package at the price of RM1188++ per table. This is inclusive of the usage of the grand ballroom with some wedding decoration, 1 night stay in the bridal suite, complimentary food tasting session for 10 pax, etc...

We are required to set the date of food testing session to be at least 1 month before our wedding dinner. Hence, we decided to have it on 17 March. We invited some close relatives and friends for the session. Here are what we had...

  • Harmony of Four Celebration Platter (Crispy Cheese Roll, Breaded Crab Claws, Octopus on Jellyfish & Sliced Abalone on Mango Salad) -> I did not have chance  to snap the photo of the full plate because the waiter straightaway served it to our individual plates. This dish is generally alright for me. I'm not a fan of the typical first dish in Chinese wedding dinner.
  • Braised Seafood Soup -> Since the hotel is not serving shark's fin, it will be braised seafood soup for this second dish. This is really tasty and the texture is just right, neither too thick nor too watery. No complaint.
  • Roasted Golden Chicken topped with Crackers -> The chicken meat is tasty, tender and juicy. The skin is crispy. However, the crackers are not crispy enough. Some of my guests suggested to serve with some sauce, hence the chef agreed to serve it with sesame sauce on the actual day.
  • Steamed Red Garoupa with Premium Soya Sauce -> The fish is fresh and steamed to perfection. It's fine, tender, juicy and tasty. Most of my guests like this dish.
  • Stir Fried Buttered Prawns with Curry Leaves -> Prawns and big and fresh. Taste quite good. No complaint.
  • Braised Tau Kan and Wild Mushrooms on Brassica -> I normally don't expect much from this dish, as long as nothing goes wrong. No complaint.
  • Steamed Pearl Glutinous Rice in Lotus Leaves -> According to the wedding planner, this is the favourite dish in their wedding dinner menu and I do agree with it. The glutinous rice is really tender and really tasty.... The best glutinous rice I've ever eaten. My guests love this.
  • Hot Double Boiled Lotus Seeds with Pak Hup -> This tastes quite good except for the Pak Hup which is a bit sourish. According to the chef, sometimes dried Pak Hup might be sourish. To solve this problem, he suggested to serve fresh Pak Hup on the actual day.
  • Deep Fried Lotus Pancake -> This is my favourite dessert during wedding dinner. However, it's slightly too oily during food tasting and we feedback to the chef. He noted my comment and promised to make sure it won't happen on the actual day. He really did it.
In conclusion, for a hotel wedding, this set of dishes is the best that I have ever had. The food is fresh and tasty, with generous portion of serving. That's why I chose Sunway Putra Hotel out of 20 enquiries that I made to other hotels and restaurants in Klang Valley.

Here's the location and contact of Sunway Putra Hotel:

Olive @ Sooka Sentral, KL Sentral

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 6.5
  • Price (1-10): 6.5
  • Environment (1-10): 7.5
7 March 2012: My colleagues and I were looking for a restaurant in KL Sentral for a colleague's farewell lunch. We eventually decided to try Olive, which is comparatively new in that area. Olive is a restaurant serving Western food in clean and comfortable environment. However, the price is slightly above average comparing to restaurants nearby.

Here are what we had...

  • Fettuccine Al Funghi (RM23++) -> Creamy and tasty. Worth a try.
  • Linguine Arabiata (RM18++) -> Quite tasty and appetizing.
  • Aglio Olio Spaghetti (RM18++) -> Not bad.
  • Salmon Fettuccine (RM26++) -> Quite good. Worth a try.
  • Lemongrass Chicken (RM18++) -> As seen from the photo, the chicken is overcooked and burnt.
  • Fish & Chips (RM23++) -> The chips are replaced with tapioca, which doesn't go with fish at all. What a weird combination... Anyway, the fish is alright though.

Omega Restaurant & Music Lounge @ Bukit Jalil

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7.5
  • Price (1-10): 6.5
  • Environment (1-10): 8
14 February 2012: It's Valentine's Day and in order to avoid paying for too expensive dinner, we chose to have a Valentine's Day lunch instead. Since we are no taking leave, we were looking for a restaurant near my husband's office and we found Omega Restaurant & Music Lounge. It's a restaurant during day time and a lounge at night. The ambience there is decent enough for Valentine's Day celebration.

 Here are what we had...

We chose to have a set of Western Set Lunch (RM17.80) which comprises of:
  • Starter -> There are options of either Chef Salad or Soup of the Day. We chose Soup of the Day, which is cream of mushroom soup. It's quite creamy and tasty but slightly too salty.
  • Main Course -> We chose Grilled Lamb Shoulder served with Mash Potato and Black Pepper Sauce for main course. This is quite good. Worth a try.

We also had Spaghetti Carbonara (RM30.50). This is not bad but similar to the mushroom soup, this is slightly too salty as well. Fyi, my tolerance level for saltiness is above average.

In conclusion, this restaurant serves average food at reasonable price in decent environment. I might return to this restaurant again if I so happen to be looking for food in that area.

Restaurant Crown Palace @ Sri Petaling

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 8
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 8
11 February 2012: Restaurant Crown Palace (皇庭滋味馆) in Bandar Baru Sri Petaling is an air-conditioned restaurant that serves wide variety of Chinese cuisine.

We went to Crown Palace for dim sum and here's what we had...

  • Har Gao (虾饺) (RM5) -> Fresh prawns, thin dumplings skin. Not bad.
  • Siu Mai (烧卖) (RM4.60) -> Quite tasty.
  • Steamed Fish Balls (蒸鱼卖) (RM4.60) -> Springy and tasty. Worth a try.
  • Fried Yam Dumpling (炸芋角) (RM4.60) -> Yam a bit too hard and not crispy enough. Suspect over-fried.
  • Fried Radish Cake (煎萝卜糕) (RM4.60) -> Quite good.
Dim sum here are generally quite good. The price is reasonable considering the clean and comfortable environment. I might go again if I'm so happen to be around that area.

Portugese Grilled Fish @ Petaling Street, KL

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 8.5
  • Price (1-10): 8
  • Environment (1-10): 6
2 February 2012: The well-known Portugese Grilled Fish in Petaling Street (Chinatown) is located along the walkway outside Hong Leong Bank. The famous Kim Lian Kee Hokkien Mee is just across the street. This Portugese Grilled Fish stall opens in the evening.

We ordered Grilled Stringray (蒲鱼) and Lala (啦啦), medium size, which costs RM15. This portion is just nice for 2 person.

I really like the taste of this. Tasty and spicy with generous amount of sauce. Anyway, it might be a bit too spicy for those who don't fancy spicy food.

Menu for other available dishes at this stall is as below:

Mae Salong Restaurant @ Sungai Petani, Kedah

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 6.5
  • Price (1-10): 6.5
  • Environment (1-10): 8
28 January 2012: Mae Salong Restaurant (美斯乐餐厅) is a restaurant located in a quite secluded housing area in Sungai Petani. It occupies quite a huge compound and has very good ambience with Balinese-like furnishing. You can choose either to dine indoor or outdoor. The outdoor furnishing includes water mill, water fountain, pond, playground, garden, etc... Since it's at night and I was using a basic point and shoot camera, I did not manage to capture any good photo there, which is such a waste. Anyway, photos of Mae Salong can be found in their facebook photos.

Mae Salong serves mainly Thai food. I was there for Chinese New Year gathering dinner with my relatives. Since there are almost 30 of us, we made advance reservation for 3 tables. Here comes the food...

I'm not sure of the name of the dishes specifically because I'm not the person placing the order. As for the quality of the food, I would say they are generally average. A point worth mentioning is that the grilled fish wasn't well-cooked. Hence, we return it and request them to replace with another fish. It took them really long to come with the replacement, most probably because it's Chinese New Year season and they are really busy and under-staff.

Anyway, the cost of these dishes for a table of 10 pax is RM300. This is slightly more expensive than average restaurant in Sungai Petani which potentially serves better food. If you are looking for a place with good ambience, this restaurant is highly recommended.

Kim Heong Restaurant @ Sri Petaling

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 4
  • Price (1-10): 5.5
  • Environment (1-10): 7.5
21 January 2012: It was a hot afternoon and my parents and I were looking for an air-conditioned restaurant for lunch. Hence, we decided to give Kim Heong Restaurant (好清香海鲜大饭店) a try. Kim Heong Restaurant is located opposite The Store supermarket. This shop lot used to be Janbo Restaurant but taken over by Kim Heong Restaurant few years ago.

I was starving prior to having lunch. Hence, I forgot to snap photos of the dishes before eating. However, after trying each of the dishes, I decided to snap photos of the leftover. Here they are...

  • Fried Hokkien Noodles (福建面) (RM15) -> The noodle is extremely salty. Although our tolerance level for saltiness is above average, I still cannot take this. Something's is really wrong with the taste bud of the chef.
  • Fried Spare Rib with Shrimp Paste (黄金虾酱骨) (RM13 per piece) -> Each piece of spare ribs costs RM13. We ordered 3 pieces of this, so this dish costs us RM39. The spare ribs are too dry, hard, tough and rough. This is definitely difficult to eat.
  • Pumpkin Beancurd (金瓜豆腐) (RM18) -> Almost tasteless.
  • Spinach with Soup (上汤苋菜) (RM15) -> I can't imagine that even this dish can go wrong. The spinach itself is young and fresh but it is somehow overcook until it become hard and difficult to be eaten.
My parents and I suspect that the dishes is not cooked by the main chef since it's near Chinese New Year. Hence, we checked with the person in charge. However, the person in charge insist that the main chef actually cook the dishes. While we are complaining about the quality of the dishes, a lady from another table interrupted and claimed that she just complained on the food.

In conclusion, quality of food here is very disappointing and definitely overpriced. PLEASE THINK TWICE BEFORE DECIDING TO DINE IN THIS RESTAURANT.

Chun Xiang Bak Kut Teh @ Jalil Link, Bukit Jalil

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 6.5
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 7
7 January 2012: I was searching for a place for lunch in Bukit Jalil when I came across a bak kut teh restaurant at a secluded corner in Jalil Link.

  • Clay Pot Bak Kut Teh (砂煲肉骨茶) (RM20.50) -> This is 2 person portion. The bak kut teh soup is not so tasty, but edible. Not recommended though.
  • Dried Bak Kut Teh (干肉骨茶) (RM10.50) -> This is 1 person portion. Quite tasty but I personally prefer bak kut teh with soup.
  • Peppercorn Pig Maw Soup (胡椒猪肚汤) (RM10) -> Not bad. Worth a try.
  • Deep-fried Dough Sticks (炸油条) (RM1.50) -> Crispy, crunchy and taste just right. Best dish of the meal.
  • Tofu Poh (豆腐卜) (RM3) -> Average.
  • Yao Mak (油麦) (RM7) -> Average.

In general, dishes here are just average. I most probably won't return to this restaurant.
