Uncle Duck Hong Kong Steamboat @ Times Square, KL

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7.5
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 7
26 September 2011: Uncle Duck Hong Kong Steamboat Restaurant (得哥火锅餐厅) is a steamboat restaurant from Hong Kong. It serves steamboat in air-conditioned, cosy and clean environment.

Here, steamboat is served in individual pot, cooked on induction cooker. I personally favour this due to safety and hygienic reason.

Steamboat sets available here are:
  • Seafood (RM20.90)
  • Pearl Oyster (RM19.90)
  • Mixed Beef (RM19.90)
  • Australian Beef (RM21.90)
  • Dory Fish (RM19.90)
  • Cuttlefish Noodle (RM21.90)
  • Vegetarian (RM16.90)
  • Roasted Duck (RM19.90)
  • Sliced Pork (RM19.90)
  • Chicken (RM18.90)
  • Australian Mutton (RM22.90)
  • Ma Yau Fish (RM22.90)
Besides, each individual is free to have their steamboat ingredient cooked in their preferred soup. The choices of soup available here are:
  • Congee
  • Coriander & Century Egg Soup
  • Chicken Soup
  • Tomato & Fish Soup
  • Tomyam Soup
  • Hong Kong Satay Soup
  • Super Spicy Soup (add RM2)
  • Ginseng Soup (add RM10)
  • Herbal Soup (add RM4)
  • Korean Ginseng Soup (add RM10)
  • Pumpkin Onion Cream Soup (add RM2)
I personally like the tomato & fish soup. It's tasty by itself yet doesn't cover the taste of the ingredients. As for the ingredients set, I ordered Sliced Pork Set.

Sliced Pork Set consists of sliced pork, vegetable, corn, radish, mushrooms, fish cakes, dumplings, prawn, etc... Some of the ingredients are frozen food yet still taste fresh when cooked with steamboat.

Finally, I would like to specially recommend the Mango Sago (芒果西米露) here, which I order almost every time I dine here. However, I did not order that this round because I was on diet. It's the best Mango Sago I've ever had, definitely better than those in the famous KTZ (记得吃).

Pao Xiang Bak Kut Teh @ Setapak

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 6
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 7
25 September 2011: Pao Xiang Bak Kut Teh (宝香绑线肉骨茶) specializes in string tied bak kut teh. It comes with very little soup, which looks more like the sauce. The soup/sauce is supposed to be concentrated bak kut teh. However, after trying Pao Xiang Bak Kut Teh in Mid Valley Megamall, I concluded that I do not enjoy this type of bak kut teh. I prefer those with more soup.

Anyway, I decided to give it another try at a different branch. It was 2pm on a Sunday yet the restaurant is less than 10% occupied.

Here are what we had...

  • Luan Kut (软骨), Sui Kut (小骨), Ka Wan (脚弯) (RM10.50++ per bowl) -> I can't really differentiate which is which. They taste the same. The main difference is the type of meat, either it's with less fat or more fat, less bone or more bone. As for the taste, they are almost tasteless. The soup/sauce which is supposed to be concentrated bak kut teh is also very plain. I would say this is the worst bak kut teh I have ever tried. A staff there told us honestly that the soup is obtained from the HQ in Klang. Then each individual branch/franchise will add water into the soup. The amount of water added into the soup directly affects the taste of the soup.
  • Tau Fu Pok (豆腐卜) (RM5++) -> Similar to the meat, this is almost tasteless as well.
  • Yau Mak (油麦) (RM8.50++) -> Average.
  • Yau Char Guai (油条) (RM4++) -> Ironically, this is the best dish of all, even though it is just average. Not crispy enough.
After this meal, I told myself that I won't give Pao Xiang Bak Kut Teh another chance. Here's the location and contact of Pao Xiang Bak Kut Teh @ Setapak...

Pan Ki Dim Sum @ Sri Petaling

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 7
25 September 2011: After a morning walk at Bukit Komanwel, we went to Pan Ki Dim Sum (潘记包饺点心) for breakfast. It is one of the 3 famous dim sum restaurants in Sri Petaling. Pan Ki is less crowded and cleaner than the other 2 because it is located at inner road, while the other 2 are located at outer main road. I personally prefer the environment here.

Here comes the dim sum...

Most of the dim sum there are quite fresh and tasty, slightly milder than those in Clan Dim Sum. I personally like the fish-based dim sum there.

However, undeniably, the Kai Woh Pao (鸡窝包) here is not as good as the Kai Woh Pao in Clan Dim Sum. The glutinous rice here is not as tasty and slightly harder.

Besides, the price of the dim sum here is slightly higher than Clan Dim Sum. It costs us around RM60 for 4 person.

Here's the location of Pan Ki Dim Sum...
Address: 84, Jalan Radin Tengah, 57000 Sri Petaling, Kuala Lumpur.

Yue Mic Ka Restaurant @ Sri Petaling

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 6.5
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 7.5
24 September 2011: It's 3pm on a Saturday and we still haven't taken our lunch. After driving through few roads in Sri Petaling, we decided to try Yue Mic Ka Restaurant (鱼米家), which is supposed to specialize in Fish Noodles.

Since it's already past lunch time, the restaurant was rather empty and quiet. Anyway, it's a clean and cozy environment.

Here are what we had...

  • Preserved Vegetables Pork Soft Bone (梅菜猪软骨煲) (RM12.50) -> Pork is soft and tasty. Recommended.
  • Fish Paste Meehoon (鱼滑米粉) (RM8.50) -> The soup is without milk by default. It tastes not bad though.
  • Chicken Herb Drumstick Rice (一品鸡腿饭) -> This is rather disappointing. It's almost tasteless. I can't taste any herb at all.
Here's the location and and details of Yue Mic Ka...

Ho Ho Steamboat Restaurant @ Sri Petaling

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 7
23 September 2011: Ho Ho Steamboat Restaurant (好好海鲜火锅之家) is a steamboat restaurant that serves fresh steamboat ingredients from Pulau Ketam. Some of the ingredients and home-made. Besides, only clear base soup is used here. There are few branches of Ho Ho Steamboat Restaurant in Klang Valley. This branch in Sri Petaling spans across 3-4 shop lots, yet it is normally at least 80% occupied during dinner hours.

Here's the menu and here are what we had...

  • Set Menu (RM15.50 per set) -> We ordered 2 sets of this. This set consists of prawn, fish slice, fish ball, meat ball, sui gao, fish noodle, bihun, yee mee, egg, etc... Most of them are quite fresh.
  • Sliced Pork (RM20) -> We also ordered extra portion of sliced pork. It's really thinly sliced, hence it's cooked just by dipping it into boiling soup for a shortwhile.
  • BBQ Chicken Wings -> Since there are 3 of us, we ordered 3 sets of this. I'm not sure how much this costs because this is paid separately and I'm not the one paying. This is quite tasty. Recommended.

Chili Espresso @ Sooka Sentral, KL Sentral

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 7.5
23 September 2011: I went to Chili Espresso for a colleague's farewell lunch. It serves ample variety of local favourites, as well as, some western food in pleasant and cosy environment. It is normally fully occupied during lunch hour. It's advisable to make prior reservation to avoid disappointment.

Our selection of food might be a bit weird because these are not the signature dishes of Chili Espresso. The more popular dishes here are local food like mee mamak, ayam percik, etc... Anyway, here comes the food...

  • Fettucine Alfredo (RM18.80++) -> Tastes quite good and not too cheesy. Recommended.
  • Spaghetti Aglio Olio (RM16.80++) -> I personally don't really like aglio olio and this is typical aglio olio.
  • Grilled Dory Fish (RM16.80++) -> Quite good. Worth a try.
  • Tom Yum Beehoon (RM14.80++) -> Average beehoon in seafood tom yam soup. Nothing impressive and no complaints.

Restoran Ye Look @ Sri Petaling

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 8
  • Price (1-10): 8
  • Environment (1-10): 7
7 & 9 September 2011: Restoran Ye Look (以勒海鲜饭店) is a famous eat-out place in Sri Petaling, especially for those who are looking for a casual Chinese-style dinner. We dine there twice this week because I'm addicted to the herbal chicken there.

Here are what we had...

  • Herbal Kampung Chicken (药材马来鸡) (RM23) -> I have been craving for this type of herbal chicken for such a long time ever since the restaurant serving my favourite herbal chicken in Pandan Indah changed it's cook. I have been hunting for this dish up and down in Klang Valley and I finally found it here. This is half kampung chicken cooked with chinese herbs in aluminium foil. The chicken is very young, juicy and tender. The thick herbal gravy is really tasty. I personally love this. High recommended!
  • Stir-fried Fish Slices with Ginger and Spring Onion (姜葱鱼片) (RM20) -> Quite small portion and slightly overpriced. Tastes average. Not worth the price.
  • Braised Pork with Salted Fish (咸鱼花腩煲) (RM12) -> Big portion and quite tasty. Worth a try.
  • Stir-fried Kang-Kung (清炒蕹菜) (RM8) -> Average dish at reasonable price.
  • Lotus Root Soup (莲藕汤) (RM6) -> Quite tasty but the strong taste of cuttlefish covered the original taste of lotus root. I would prefer if it's without the cuttlefish.

Restoran Kam Lun Tai @ Sri Petaling

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 6.5
  • Price (1-10): 7.5
  • Environment (1-10): 8
6 September 2011: It's 9pm on Tuesday night and we were trying to avoid being stuck in Sri Petaling pasar malam. Hence, we ended up having dinner at Restoran Kam Lun Tai (锦纶泰大城堡大饭店). Here's the list of promotional dishes at affordable price:
Here are what we ordered...

  • Curry Fish Fillet (咖喱鱼片) (RM12++) -> Taste of curry powder is too strong. There are less than 5 pieces of fish slices in the whole pot.
  • Nam Yee Ribs (南乳骨) (RM10++) -> Taste alright but too bony. Not much meat can be found.
  • Yau Mak with Garlic (蒜米油麦胆) (RM8++) -> Some of the vegetables are over-fried until the vegetables become yellowish in colour. This should not happen in this "supposed to be" reputable Chinese restaurant.
  • Braised Noodles (焖伊面) (RM12++) -> Average.
In general, most of the dishes in this meal are disappointing. We suspect that the main chef was not around because it was already after 9pm.

Restoran Harbour Steamboat @ Bandar Baru Sri Petaling

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 6.5
  • Environment (1-10): 7.5
5 September 2011: We were searching around Sri Petaling area for a place to have dinner where parking is not a concern. We came across Harbour Steamboat (海港火锅) and decided to give it a try. When we walk into the restaurant, a staff asked whether we made any reservation. If not, we can only dine from 7pm to 8pm because there are a few reservations at 8pm.

Harbour Steamboat serves ala carte steamboat. We can choose the type of ingredients we want by specifying the portion. The minimum portion is 1/2. The menu with the list of all available soup and ingredients are shown below:

Here's the steamboat pot with the soup of our choice...

As for the ingredients, here are what we had...
  • Macau-style Pork Bone Soup (澳门猪骨汤) -> Quite sweet and tasty. Worth a try.
  • Pepper Soup (特色胡椒粒汤)
  • Chicken Slices (秘制鸡肉片)
  • Deep-fried Fish Balls (炸鱼丸)
  • Egg (鸡蛋)
  • Grouper Slices (新鲜石斑片)
  • Shui Gao (新鲜水饺)
  • Wan Tan (鲜虾云吞) -> Fresh and tasty. Recommended.
  • Stuffed Tau Fu Pok (自制鱼肉酿豆卜)
  • Spinach (苋菜)
  • Mushrooms (金针菇 & 凤尾菇)
  • Meehoon (广东米粉)
This meal costs RM67.20 in total for 2 person. I think this is overpriced. As for the quality of the food, I would say it's generally satisfactory. Nothing to complain but nothing impressive. When we left the restaurant at 8pm, we saw many chairs arranged nicely outside the restaurant. The owner is expecting long queue although it's a weekday. I don't understand what actually attracts the crowd...

Black & White Station @ Pandan Indah

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 7.5
2 September 2011: Black & White Station in Pandan Indah serves Chinese and Western food in clean, cosy and comfortable environment. I bought "[53% Off] 2-course Western Meal + 1 Ice cream Dessert for 2 people at Black & White Station for RM20 instead of RM42.35" voucher from Groupon. It looks unusually quiet here for a Friday evening. I have no idea what's the reason.

This deal includes:
  • 2 mushroom soup
  • 2 main course (BBQ grilled chicken chop OR Grilled fish chop)
  • Chocolate and vanilla ice-cream with oreo
Here comes the food...

  • Mushroom Soup -> Quite tasty and creamy but slightly too salty.
  • BBQ Grilled Chicken Chop -> The BBQ sauce tastes quite unique. It's a bit sweet, sour and spicy. Very appetizing. Recommended.
  • Grilled Fish Chop -> I chose garlic sauce for this. The grilled fish chop looks more like fried fish chop and it's too salty. I don't really enjoy this.
  • Ice-cream with Oreo -> Normal ice-cream with standard Oreo. Refreshing.
  • Orange + Apple + Carrot Juice (RM6.50++) -> In addition to the 2 course meal, we ordered this healthy drink which is supposed to help in digestion and good for the lungs. This tastes not bad. Worth a try.

Restoran Makanan Laut Soon Fatt @ Sri Petaling

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 8
  • Price (1-10): 8
  • Environment (1-10): 7
1 September 2011: Restoran Makanan Laut Soon Fatt (顺发海鲜饭店) is a popular dinner spot for Chinese families around Sri Petaling area.

The crowd can be seen as early as 6pm daily. You will have problem getting a table after 7pm. However, you don't have to wait long because the service here is really fast. It's the most efficient Chinese restaurant I've ever been to, especially when you order daily recommended precooked dishes. I waited for less than 10 minutes for the food to be served.

Here are what we had...

  • Herbal Chicken with Soup (药材鸡汤) (RM25) -> This is a precooked dish. Huge pot of tasty chicken and soup with generous amount of herbs. Highly recommended.
  • Braised Pork Ribs with Yam (芋头焖排骨) (RM12) -> This is another precooked dish. Pork and yam are well cooked and tasty. Recommended.
  • Stir-fried Young Potato Leaves (清炒树苗) (RM9) -> Normal stir-fried vege.
I strongly recommend this restaurant for daily casual dinner due to the minimal waiting time, good food at reasonable price. Here's the location and details of Restoran Makanan Laut Soon Fatt @ Sri Petaling...
