Cameleon Vegetarian Restaurant @ Jalan Thamboosamy, Kuala Lumpur

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 7
3 March 2011: Cameleon Vegetarian Restaurant is a vegetarian restaurant under Ahimsa Group. It is located at Jalan Thamboosamy, which is walking distance away from PWTC LRT Station, Legend Hotel and The Mall.

Since there were only 2 of us and we would like to have a light vegetarian meal, here's what we ordered...

  • Cai Po Beancurd (RM7.90) -> The beancurd is not like those very soft and fine beancurd that I normally eat. The beancurd here has texture that resemble fish cake with beancurd taste. Although this is not my usual favourite, I think it's not bad. Worth a try.
  • Choy Sam (RM9.90) -> Choy Sam with vegetarian minced meat. Taste quite nice. If I enter this restaurant without knowing that this is a vegetarian restaurant, I might not know that this a vegetarian dish. The vegetarian minced meat really resembles real mince meat.

My Restaurant @ Pandan Indah

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 6.5
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 6.5
30 March 2011: My Restaurant (家乡饭店) in Pandan Indah is an air-conditioned restaurant serving mainly Chinese food. However, the air ventilation in the restaurant is not very well done. Smoke and smell from the kitchen are trapped in the restaurant and can be obviously seen and smelled.

Here's what we ordered...

  • Steamed (Thai-Teochew style) Red Snapper (泰式潮洲烝金凤) (RM25) -> The fish served didn't look like a whole fish although it's supposed to be. It's much 'bonier' than normal red snapper. We suspect that they removed parts of the flesh for other usage and served us with the bone and small portion of the flesh. When it's served, it's fully covered by side ingredients, which we think is overdone. Besides, the taste is just normal. Thai/Teochew style of steamed fish is supposed to be very appetizing but this fish did not serve the purpose. Very disappointing dish.
  • Marmite Pork Ribs (玛蜜排骨) (RM15) -> Quite tasty. However, the pork ribs is overcooked, causing it to be very tough and difficult to chew.
  • Stir-fried Yau Mak (清炒油麦) (RM12) -> Normal but overpriced for this common dish, this portion in this type of restaurant.

Cafe de Sky Garden @ Taman Petaling Utama, Petaling Jaya

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7.5
  • Price (1-10): 7.5
  • Environment (1-10): 8
21 March 2011: Cafe De Sky Garden (天之花园精进料理坊) serves European and local favourites using natural vegetarian ingredients. It's located in Taman Petaling Utama, facing a pond/lake. The posh decoration in Cafe De Sky Garden attracts people to hold event there, such as wedding dinner, company dinner, birthday party, full moon celebration, etc...

Here's what we had...
  • White Angel (RM8.80) -> Penne with cream sauce. This is generally quite tasty except for the vegetarian prawns which tastes slightly sourish. However, I finished this huge plate of pasta alone. Worth a try.
  • Ocean Spaghetti (RM8.80) -> Spaghetti in tomato sauce. Taste of tomato a bit too strong causing the spaghetti too sourish. Not recommended.

New Giant Bowl Vegetarian @ SS2, Petaling Jaya

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7.5
  • Price (1-10): 8
  • Environment (1-10): 7
19 March 2011: I'm having vegetarian today. Since we are in PJ area, we decided to look for vegetarian food in SS2, where we came across New Giant Bowl Vegetarian Restaurant.

Here's what he had...

  • Curry Mutton Rice (RM5.50) -> Curry quite thick and tasty. Not bad.
  • Herbal Pan Mee (RM6.90) -> This is the best vegetarian herbal soup I've ever had. Impressive! I wonder how the cook did this without meat. Recommended!
  • Curry Mee (RM5.50) -> Quite tasty. Worth a try.
Generally, the food served there are worth recommending. However, the service and management are in a mess. The waiter kept on serving wrong food to wrong table. I witnessed that happening for more than 5 times throughout my meal there.

Choong Hing Seafood Restaurant @ Pandan Jaya

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 6.5
16 March 2011: Choong Hing Seafood Restaurant (重庆海鲜饭店) is a quite old restaurant in Pandan Jaya. It has been operating for more than 20 years (because that was my first visit here). Hence, the restaurant is quite run down.

Here's what we had...

  • Buttermilk Fish Slices (奶油鱼片) (RM22) -> Buttermilk is no crispy. Fish slices are tasteless and have plenty of bones. There shouldn't be so much bone in fish slices as people do not expect to find them in fish slices. This is very dangerous especially for kids. One of the worst fish dish I have ever had. Please don't ever order this dish!
  • Beancurd with Fish Cake (鱼滑豆腐) (RM10) -> Not bad. Home-made beancurd is soft and fine. Fish cake is not bad as well.
  • Stir-fried Choy Sam (青炒菜心) (RM10) -> Normal. Choy Sam quite fresh.
The portion of the dishes here is unreasonably huge for only 3 of us. We took quite some time and tried very hard to finish them to avoid food wastage.

Pao Xiang Bak Kut Teh @ Mid Valley Megamall

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7.5
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 7
4 March 2011: Pao Xiang Bak Kut Teh (宝香绑线肉骨茶) specializes in string tied bak kut teh. In accordance with traditional culinary methods, the pork is tied with cotton string to keep its shape and texture, as well as to lock in the intricate flavour during the stewing process. Pao Xiang in Mid Valley Megamall is located at the end lot of boulevard area. I personally think that lot is not strategically located.

Anyway, here's the menu and price list:

I would like to emphasize on the price of various types of tea here. Normally a waiter will go around with a basket of different types of tea, asking which tea do you want. If you are having a budget conscious meal, kindly refuse any type of chinese tea there because they cost RM7 to RM12 per tea bag.

Put the tea topic aside, you can choose the type of pork you would like to have from the menu. There are various types of pork served in very small bowl. Here's what we had...

  • Pan Fei Soul (半肥瘦/猪踝肉) (RM13++) -> Pork with partially thin and fat meat. Very tasty and tender. Worth a try.
  • Go Hui (肉骨/五花) (RM13++) -> Pork with bones (non-fatty). Not bad. Not as tasty as "Pan Fei Soul".
  • Vege (Yau Mark) (RM10++) -> Normal.
I personally do not really enjoy the bak kut teh in Pao Xiang. I prefer the type of bak kut teh with more soup. Bak kut teh in Pao Xiang is served with very small amount of soup, which actually looks more like sauce. Besides, I think the food and beverages there are overpriced, considering the ambience there is nothing worth paying for.
