Restoran Puchong Kari Enam @ Taman Esplanade

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 6.5
  • Environment (1-10): 7
26 June 2011: We went to Restoran Puchong Kari Enam (浦种咖哩鱼头) in Taman Esplanade for dinner. This is their sixth branch. Since it''s signature dish is curry fish head, we decided to try it out. If it's good, we will bring my dad along during out next visit.

We specifically emphasize that we want smallest portion for all dishes that we ordered because there are only 3 of us. Here are what we ordered...

  • Curry Fish Head (咖哩鱼头) (RM32) -> This pot of curry fish head is huge. Obviously too much for 3 person. Taste ordinary. Nothing impressive.
  • Yam Ring with Pork Ribs (佛钵排骨王) (RM30) -> Another dish with shockingly huge portion. There are at least 10 big pieces of very meaty pork ribs. Taste normal.
  • Stir-fried Kang-kung (清炒蕹菜) (RM12) -> Similar to previous 2 dishes, oversize!
In conclusion, this restaurant serves dishes in huge portion and charges the price of the portion regardless of the number of patron. I find them a bit unethical for not warning us about the size of their dishes. If the waitress inform us upon ordering, we would have ordered less. Although there are only 3 of us, the dishes served are actually enough for at least 5 pax. We have decided not to re-visit this restaurant.

Six Happiness Garden @ Ampang Waterfront

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 8
26 June 2011: I came across some online review saying that Six Happiness Garden (六福苑酒家) is famous for their dim sum. Hence, I suggested to try their dim sum for brunch on Sunday.

The variety of dim sum there is quite limited. Here are what we had...

In addition to the limited choices of dim sum, the taste of the dim sum is just generally satisfactory. There's nothing impressive or worth recommending. The dim sum is priced from RM6 to RM8. Currently, there's 20% discount for dim sum promotion during weekends.

Due to the limited variety of dim sum, we decided to order some ala carte items. Here are what we ordered...

  • Smoked Duck Slices (RM8++) -> Duck meat slices are very thin, soft and tender. The taste is quite good as well. Worth a try.
  • BBQ Pork (烧肉) (RM18++) -> Not bad. Quite crispy and tasty.
  • Stuffed Tau Fu Pok (RM10++) -> Average.
  • Deep-fried Squid with Salty Egg (RM8++) -> Not bad. Worth a try.
  • Fried Lotus Root with Peanut (RM8++) -> Average.
  • Cantonese Noodle with Seafood (RM15++) -> The noodle is rough, soggy and not springy. The gravy is almost tasteless.
We suspect that the chief chef is not around during day time. Hence, the food during day time is obviously not as good as the food served for dinner. Hence, it's not advisable to dine here during day time.

Six Happiness Garden @ Ampang Waterfront

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 8.5
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 8
19 June 2011: My dad suggested that we go Six Happiness Garden (六福苑酒家) in Ampang Waterfront for dinner. In addition to father's day, today is also my mom's birthday. Since I've already paid for lunch, this meal will be on my father. In conjunction with father's day, most of the tables are reserved in advance. We are lucky enough to get a table without any prior reservation.

Here are what my dad ordered...

  • Double-boiled Mini Buddha Jump Over The Wall (迷你金钱翅佛跳墙) (RM88++ per pax) -> This is the portion for 1 pax. My dad ordered 2 of this. It consists of a shark's fin, whole piece of abalone, sea cucumber, fish maw, black chicken, etc... Despite the amount of expensive seafood used, the soup tastes average. Anyway, I like the abalone.
  • Steamed Live Tiger Garoupa (清蒸游水老虎斑) (RM137++) -> In conjunction to father's day celebration, the promotional price is RM13++ per 100g. The normal seasonal price of this fish is RM15++ per 100g. Since it's live fish (killed right before cooking), this is really fresh and tasty. I love this a lot.
  • Sauted Pork Ribs in Oriental Style (京都加厚骨) (RM20++) -> We were addicted to this dish since our previous visit here. However, this dish is not as good as previous time, most probably due to the higher volume of patrons on father's day. It's still quite tasty though.
  • Spinach with Soup (上汤苋菜) (RM15++) -> Not bad.
In conclusion, although the quality of the dishes served today is not as good as some other days (due to father's day), I'm generally satisfied with this meal. I'll definitely go again, but not on special day when it's more packed than normal.

Oriental Pearl Restaurant @ Bukit Jalil Golf & Country Resort

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 6.5
  • Environment (1-10): 8
19 June 2011: I brought my parents to Oriental Pearl Restaurant in Bukit Jalil Golf & Country Resort for lunch. The meal is on me since it's father's day and my mom's birthday. Oriental Pearl Restaurant is a seafood restaurant under Tai Thong Resources Food & Services Sdn. Bhd.

Here are what we had...

  • Assam Curry Fish Head (RM20++) -> This dish is recommended by the waitress, yet this is the most disappointing dish. First of all, the fish is not fresh. On the other hand, we couldn't taste assam at all. Ignoring the assam part, the curry itself is just average, not impressive.
  • Stir-fried Prawn with Asparagus (RM36++) -> Best dish of the meal. The prawns and fresh, crunchy and tasty. However, for this portion at this price, it's more expensive than expected.
  • Home-made Bean Curd with Melon (RM18++) -> The bean curd is a mixture of bean curd, fish paste and vege. It's not as fine and tender as normal bean curd, but it's better than expected. Taste average.
  • Stir-fried Seafood Noodles (RM18++) -> Average.
  • Soup (RM28++) -> 2 different types of double-boiled soup for 2 pax. This is a promotional item. Taste reasonable.
In conclusion, it's a disappointing experience probably because I set quite high expectation prior to the meal. I have read some quite positive reviews on this restaurant previously.

Seasons Cafe @ Grand Seasons Hotel

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 8.5
  • Price (1-10): 6.5
  • Environment (1-10): 8
18 June 2011: I had buffet dinner with my family at Seasons Cafe in Grand Seasons Hotel. My mom bought the buffet vouchers during MATTA Fair at the price of around RM40 per pax (my mom forgot the exact price). The normal price for buffet dinner at Season Cafe is around RM70-RM80 per person.

Here comes the food...

My dad enjoys the seafood pot that consists of sea cucumber, fish maw, sliced abalone, mushrooms, scallops, fish balls, etc... The ingredients are fresh and tasty. My dad said, "This pot of seafood alone is already worth the price paid".

Besides, the shark's fin soup taste great as well. The shark's fin is served separately and placed next to the shark's fin soup. You can choose to eat only the shark's fin or together with the soups. Some guests did not notice the bowl of shark's fin that served separately so they only take the soup without shark's fin.

Other food such as chicken, fish, lamb, vegetables and dessert are generally satisfactory. I enjoy most of them, no complaints.

However, the seafood steamboat is quite disappointing. You are allowed to choose your own raw ingredients and soup, put in claypot and cook on the portable stove there. The raw ingredients available are fish, prawns, oyster, fish balls, mushrooms, vegetables, etc... As for the soup, there are herbal and tomyam soup. From my current and past experience, the raw ingredients used in this section are not very fresh. I won't take anything from this section anymore.

Asia Cafe Food Court @ Subang Jaya

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 8
  • Price (1-10): 7.5
  • Environment (1-10): 6.5
17 June 2011: Asia Cafe Food Court is located in SS15, Subang Jaya. Asia Cafe is a popular hangout place for college students nearby. It serves wide variety of food, such as Western, Korean, Italian and local delicacies.

Although Asia Cafe is quite far from my house, I have always been looking forward to eat there. This because my favourite grilled fish and fried kuey teow are there.

Grilled Stingray with Vegetables (RM18) -> I have been craving for this grilled fish for some time. It's the best grilled fish I've eaten so far. I really love the sambal. However, it is a bit disappointing this time. It is slightly overcooked, causing the skin to be tough and difficult to eat. Anyway, the sambal is still tasty.

Fried Kuey Teow with Duck Egg (RM6) -> I'm not sure whether it's the duck egg or the cook. I really love this. It's delicious but a bit too oily. I do understand that it's almost impossible to find nice fried kuey teow that's not oily. Anyway, please make sure the lady shown in the photo above is the one frying else it won't be as nice.

Toh Yuen @ Klang Executive Club

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7
  • Price (1-10): 7.5
  • Environment (1-10): 7.5
12 June 2011: I bought "54% off Dim Sum Buffet @ Toh Yuen, KEC" discount vouchers from Everyday. After discount, it is RM12.50 per pax. Similar to the discount vouchers I bought for Zing @ Grand Millennium Hotel, they are actually meant for father's day and my mom birthday but Toh Yuen is fully-booked on that day...

Toh Yuen Chinese Restaurant in Klang Executive Club serves authentic Cantonese specialties. Dim sum buffet is only available during weekends. We arrived at around 10am and it was already almost fully-occupied. Here are some of the dim sum that we ate. By the way, there were 4 of us.

I can't comment on each and every dim sum that we ate. I can only recall those tat are specially good or bad...
  • Stir-fried Radish Cake -> Taste good, well-absorbed deep in the radish cake.
  • Yam Puff -> Not bad. A bit cold. I think this is unavoidable for buffet dim sum.
  • Chu Cheung Fun with prawns -> Chu cheong fun is not bad. Prawns are tiny and not very fresh. Anyway, cannot expect too much for buffet at this price.
  • Bao -> Skin is quite soft and tender. Filling is quite tasty.
  • Porridge -> Texture is fine enough but tasteless.
  • Steamed Dim Sum -> The steamed dim sum tastes quite good in general.
  • Deep-fried Chicken Wings -> Skin is crispy enough and taste quite good, but I personally think that it's a bit too sweet. I guess this is due to excessive amount of ajinomoto.
  • Egg Tart -> Skin quite crispy and fluffy. Filling a bit too sweet.
  • Other Dessert (Kuih) -> Below average. You can find better at any hawker stall. Not recommended.
  • Tong Shui -> Not bad, especially the one with lily buds, apple, pear, etc...
  • Gui Ling Gou -> The worst I've ever tried. Rough and weird texture. Taste extraordinarily bitter. Definitely not the normal type of bitterness for gui ling gou. Seriously not recommended.
In conclusion, at RM12.50 per person, this dim sum buffet is definitely worth a try.

Six Happiness Garden @ Ampang Waterfront

Rating:

  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 8
11 June 2011: We went to Six Happiness Garden (六福苑酒家) in Ampang Waterfront again. This time we bring along my father. He likes high-end Chinese cuisine, especially seafood.

Here are what we had...

  • Sauted Pork Ribs in Oriental Style (京都加厚骨) (RM20++) -> Pork ribs are thick, tender and juicy. There are definitely more meat than bones. The sauce absorbed deep into the meat. Very tasty. The best pork ribs dish I've had so far. Highly recommended.
  • Braised Sea Cucumber & Fish Maw with Mushrooms (海参鱼漂北菇盆) (RM40++) -> This dish costs RM20++ per pax. We ordered 2 pax portion. This is really tasty as well with generous portion of sea cucumber and fish maw. Recommended.
  • Braised Bean Curd with Seafood (海鲜自制豆腐) (RM25++) -> Fine and tasty home-made bean curd with generous portion of seafood. Worth a try.
  • Stir-Fried Choy Sam (清炒菜芯) (RM15++) -> Young and fresh vege.

Zing @ Grand Millennium Hotel, Kuala Lumpur

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 9
  • Price (1-10): 6.5
  • Environment (1-10): 8.5
10 June 2011: I bought "6-Course Fine Dining Chinese Dinner at Zing, Grand Millennium Hotel for RM39 instead of RM102.08" discount vouchers from Groupon. The initial purpose of buying the vouchers was to celebrate father's day and my mom's birthday that fall on the same day. However, Zing is fully-booked on that day. Hence, I've no choice but to utilize the discount vouchers much earlier.

Here comes the 6-Course dinner which costs us RM39 per pax...

  • Starters (Deep-fried Soft Shell Crab, Salad Wanton, Stir-fried Squid with X.O. Sauce, Stir-fried Kong Pao Diced Chicken) -> Delicious, especially the soft shell crab, shell is crispy while flesh is fine, juicy and tasty. Highly recommended.
  • Roasted Meat Platter -> Tasty, soft and juicy but not too fat. Texture and taste just right. Highly recommended.
  • Stewed Soon Hock Fish with Bean Puff and Whole Garlic -> This is a slightly disappointing dish. I would prefer if this is steamed soon hock, not deep-fried and stewed. It makes the skin a bit tough. Besides, there's quite a number of bones in the piece of fish. I don't really enjoy this dish. Anyway, putting aside the skin and bones, this is indeed quite tasty.
  • Braised Homemade Bean Curd with Stir-fried Scallop and Garden Greens -> I love this. The homemade bean curd is extraordinarily soft, fine and tasty. One of the best bean curd I've eaten so far. The generous piece of scallop on top does add to the taste of the bean curd.
  • Stir-fried Egg Noodles with Shredded Honey Barbecue Pork and Soya -> Tasty and not too oily. Just nice. Not bad.
  • Sweetened Potato Soup with Glutinous Rice Dumpling -> I personally do not like sweetened potato soup. I somehow feel that this dessert doesn't fit into the fine-dining category. My other family members think that this is just average.
In conclusion, it's an enjoyable experience dining at Zing. Most of the staffs are also very helpful, friendly and professional. Here's the location and contact of Zing...

Nong & Jimmy Thai Seafood BBQ @ Taman Cahaya, Ampang

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 6.5
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 6
9 June 2011: Nong & Jimmy Thai Seafood BBQ is actually 10 mins walk from my house. I tried it once few years ago and I don't feel like want to go again. However, today, my father suggested to have our dinner there, since it's the nearest available restaurant from my house.

It's a big food stall with open-space dining area and open-space car park next to it. The car park is always full while the dining area is always packed, causing it to be hot and stuffy, especially near the BBQ area. I know this restaurant is famous for their cheap Thai seafood BBQ, but I’m not really a Thai seafood BBQ lover. Hence, here’s what we tried…

  • Fried Rice (RM5) -> Tastes average. Prawns are decent an fresh. Reasonable price. I love the generous portion of fried egg, merely because I'm a hardcore egg lover.
  • Thai BBQ 'Kampung' Fish (RM12) -> This is the price for 2 'Kampung' fish, not 1 (as shown in photo above). My father has already eaten 1 of the fish before I could manage to snap the photo of it. Taste average. I don't really like it mainly because I don't enjoy eating 'Kampung' fish. Besides, I don't know how to appreciate Thai BBQ because it's dry and tasteless.
  • Thai Style Steamed Siakap (RM32) -> Obviously overpriced for Siakap in this type of dining environment. Taste average. Nothing impressive. Chong Yuan Seafood Restaurant serves similar dish that tastes much better at significantly lower price.
  • Stir-fried Kangkung (RM9) -> Overpriced. Taste average. I don't understand why the sauce is so dark in colour. Is it soy sauce or it's the colour of the 'wok'?
In conclusion, I don't really like the experience of dining there. I won't go again unless my father suggests to go somewhere really near again...

Delicious @ Bangsar Village II

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7.5
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 8
8 June 2011: My colleagues and I went to Delicious in Bangsar Village II for lunch. Delicious serves western and local favourites from breakfast till late supper. It's quite packed during lunch time. We did not make any reservation, so we had to wait for a while before we are seated.

Here are what we had...

  • Turkey Ham & Cheese Toastie (RM16.90++) -> Toast bread is crispy and fluffy. Filings are delicious. Recommended.
  • Spaghetti Carbonara (RM23.90++) -> Taste slightly too plain. Not cheesy/creamy enough. I don't really enjoy this.
  • Aglio Olio Spaghetti (RM15.90++) -> Looks and tastes too plain. Not recommended.
  • Green Curry Chicken (RM19.90++) -> Generous portion of green curry chicken. Taste not bad. My favourite green curry chicken is still those in Amarin Heavenly Thai.
My colleague found a tiny strand of hair in the green curry chicken and complained to the waiter. The waiter apologized to us and waived the charge of green curry chicken. Besides, he also offer us a complimentary slice of dessert. Hence, we chose Chocolate Brownies.

Chocolate Brownies -> Thick and warm chocolate sauce over vanilla ice cream and chocolate brownies. Hot and cold at the same time. Chocolate brownies and sauce are really creamy and chocolatie. Absolutely goes well with the name of 'Delicious'. Highly recommended.

Restoran Clan Dim Sum @ Sri Petaling

Rating:
  • Food (1-10): 7.5
  • Price (1-10): 7
  • Environment (1-10): 6
5 June 2011: We went to Sri Petaling for dim sum brunch. There are a few quite famous dim sum restaurants in Sri Petaling. Restoran Clan (大家城点心茶楼) is one of them. It operates daily, from evening until afternoon on the next day. The signature dish here is Kai Woh Pao (鸡窝包).

The seats are normally fully occupied especially during weekends. Here are what we had (total cost RM45 including a pot of Chinese tea for 3 pax)...

  • Kai Woh Pao (鸡窝包) -> Combination of loh mai kai (糯米鸡) and char siew pao (叉烧包). A very innovative invention. The pao is tender and fine. Char siew and glutinous rice are quite tasty. However, the glutinous rice is not soft enough. Recommended and worth a try but I think it can be better.
  • Steamed Dim Sum -> We ordered har gao, siu mai, crystal gao and fish balls. Taste average.
  • Yam Puff (芋角) -> Yam is fried until quite crispy and fluffy. Tastes not bad.
  • Yam Ring (佛钵) -> Average.
  • Fried Radish Cake (炒萝卜糕) -> Tasty. Slightly too oily. It will be better if the radish cake is cut into smaller pieces.
  • Century Egg & Minced Meat Porridge (皮蛋瘦肉粥) -> Tastes quite good but porridge is not fine enough.
  • Chu Cheong Fun with Prawns (猪肠粉) -> Average.
  • Egg Tarts (蛋塔) -> I like the fluffiness of the skin. Recommended.

2 June 2011: Utopia Veggie Cuisine (庭园素食风味小筑) is located in OUG Plaza. It serves vegetarian cuisine in air-conditioned and cozy environment. I love the ambiance in this restaurant, very comfortable, soothing and relaxing.

We had...
  • Curry Mutton Rice (RM5) -> Texture of vegetarian mutton is very similar real mutton. Curry is thick and tasty as well. Recommended.
  • Hokkien Mee (RM5) -> The best vegetarian Hokkien mee I've had so far. Really tasty. There's even vegetarian lard which is really crispy. Recommended.
In conclusion, Utopia Veggie Cuisine serves tasty and healthy vegetarian cuisine at reasonable price in cozy environment. One of my favourite vegetarian restaurant. Highly recommended.

1 June 2011: I went to Rabbit Cafe in Bandar Baru Sri Petaling for lunch. I got to know about Rabbit Cafe because the owner/cook appeared in a TV Show, featuring 雨扬居士, a Taiwanese feng shui master.
